THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MAYNES/SCRUTON

George Rossiter Scruton was born on 27 December 1863 in Bayham, Ontario to John Scruton (1834-1887) and Emma Ann (Amanda) Rossiter (1835-1901). His siblings were: Richard James (1857-1929), John (1859-1917), Sarah Marie (1860-1864), Robert (1863-1940), Alfred (1867-1915) and Edward (1873-1946). He was raised in Vienna, Elgin, Ontario and married Annie Timmons or Simmons on 28 January 1887. Most records appear to have recorded Annie's maiden name as Timmons, but it looks much more like Simmons on her marriage record.

If her maiden name was Timmons, that might explain the middle initial, T, in the quilt signature. We have noted that many women signed with the middle initial of their maiden name.

Annie was born on 2 July 1866 in New York, USA to Francis Timmons/Simmons and Elizabeth. Census records indicated that she immigrated to Canada in 1881 or 1884. George and Annie were living in Harrison, Manitoba in 1901 and in Beausejour, Manitoba in 1911. They raised four children: Hereward Leigh (1888-1961), George F (b 1889), Arla Norine Rossiter (1890-1981) and Henry "Gordon" (Harry) (1900-1957). They likely moved from Winnipeg to Saskatoon in 1916 as the family was enumerated in both places that year. It appeared that the father, George, moved before the rest of the family as he was the only one enumerated at 108 4th Ave, Saskatoon in 1916. By 1918 the family was living at 319 3rd Ave N and George was employed as a manager for Prairie City Oil Company. George was still listed in the Saskatoon Henderson Directory at that address until at least 1922, but the family could not be located in the 1921 census.

By 1930, George and Annie were living in Hilo, Hawaii and their son Gordon and his wife, Martha, were living with them. George died on 20 December 1935 in Hilo and Annie died in 1948 at an unknown location. Arla Scruton was born on 10 May 1890 in Elgin, Ontario. She married Gordon Neil Maynes on 14 July 1909 in Beausejour, Manitoba. Gordon Maynes was born on 18 December 1879 in Grandy, Quebec to Samuel George Maynes (1843-1917) and Isabella Neil (1847-1930). His siblings were: Alice Maude (1870-1957), James Samuel (b 1871), Samuel Henry (1874-1958), William Arthur (1876-1955) and George Clifford (b 1878). The Maynes family lived in Vienna Rock, Minnesota in 1885. By 1906 George and his brother William were living in Emerson, Manitoba.

Arla and Gordon had one son, Garnet Rossiter who was born on 15 August 1910 in the RM of Birtle, Manitoba. In 1911 Gordon and Arla were living in Foxwarren, Manitoba and that was the same address given in 1916 when Gordon enlisted for WWI. Oddly, Garnet was not living with them in 1911, even though his birth was registered in Manitoba in 1910. Although Foxwarren was manually checked for the 1916 census, the family could not be found. Mrs Gordon Maynes was listed at the same address as her parents in the 1918 Saskatoon Henderson Directory. It is presumed that she and Garnett went to live with her parents while Gordon was at War.

By 1921 the Maynes family had moved to Spirit River, Alberta. Gordon died at an unknown location in 1979 and Arla on 21 September 1981 in New Westminster, British Columbia. Garnet married Alma Minnie LaLonde (b 1910) on 13 October 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Nothing more could be discovered about Garnet. Gordon Scruton was born 19 June 1900 in the RM of Harrison, Manitoba. In 1916 he was living with his parents in Winnipeg. Gordon was listed in the 1918 Saskatoon Henderson Directory as a reporter for The Daily Star living at the same address as his parents. He was living with his parents in Hilo, Hawaii at the time of the 1930 census and in the same city with his wife, Martha M (1904), and two sons in 1940. Gordon died in Hilo on 22 November 1957.

Hector Rossiter "Robert" Scruton was born on 8 April 1909 in Brandon, Manitoba to Hereward Leigh Scruton (1888-1961) and Florence "Pearl" McFarlen. There was a listing for H R Scruton in the 1911 Regina Henderson Directory, but unfortunately the information was from an index that did not include an address. There was a family living at 1611 Retallack St in the 1911 census that was extremely difficult to read that may have been Hereward's family. If it was, there was a daughter born in 1910 that must have died by the time that Hereward enlisted for WWI where he declared that he had a wife and a son. By 1920, Hereward was divorced and was a patient in the Fort Lyon Naval Sanatorium in Bent, Colorado. Between 1920 and 1927, he married Margurite H Hunt (1899-1966) and had four more children - 3 boys and a girl. From 1930 until his death on 14 October 1961, he lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but Hector was never enumerated with him in any of the census records.

Hector was a first cousin (of about the same age) to Gordon Scruton mentioned above and both children signed in the same area of the quilt. It is believed that Hector happened to be in Saskatoon visiting his grandparents during the time the quilt was being made.

Efforts to track Hector in census records mostly failed. He was living in Highland Park, Lake, Illinois in 1930 and was married to Rosabella Phillips at that time. Rosabella was born on 17 August 1906 in Georgia and died on 22 May 1990 in Clarke, Georgia. Hector died on 18 April 2010 in Young Harris, Towns, Georgia. Both Rosabella and Hector were buried in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville, Banks, Georgia.
