ROBERT JOHN McAUSLAN, ANN "MAUD" McAUSLAN née ROBSON and

MABEL EDITH HOGG McEWEN

Robert John McAuslan was born on 10 January 1873 in Euphrasia Township, Grey, Ontario to James M McAuslan (1839-1921) and Elizabeth Black (1844-1925). His siblings were: Jane (Jennie) (1871-1952), Catharine Elizabeth (1875-1939), Herbert James (1878-1948), Mary Lou (1880-1880), Ashley Thomas (1882-1951), William Alexander (1884-1963) and Edith Ravina (Vina) (1886-1974).

Robert was raised in Euphrasia and married Ann "Maud" Robson on 25 December 1901 in Thornbury, Ontario. She was born on 16 October 1877 in Thornbury to Robert Charles Robson (1840-1919) and Charlotte Anna Alexander (1849-1936). Her siblings were: Lillian M (b 1879), Alice Ethel (b 1880), Ada Rose (b 1883) and Pearl Mable (b 1885). In 1881 the Robson family was living in Collingwood Township, Grey, Ontario and from 1891 to 1901 they were in Thornbury.

Robert and Maud had one son, James Cecil who was born in Collingwood on 14 April 1903 and died in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 31 August 1980. From 1911 to 1921 the McAuslan family was living on a farm located at 18-41-21-W3 in Buffalo RM, Saskatchewan. Buffalo RM is about 150km north-west of Saskatoon.

Robert died on 15 September 1953 and Maud on 1 June 1952, both in Unity, Saskatchewan.

There was a family history posted in an Ancestry tree that indicated that Ashley Thomas McAuslan had moved from Saskatoon in 1922. If he had been living in Saskatoon in 1918, Robert and Maud may have been on a visit to see him when they signed the quilt.

Mabel Edith Hogg McEwen was born on 2 March 1889 in the RM of Sifton, Manitoba to Murdock Gillis McEwen (b 1858) and Mary Helen (Minnie) Hogg (b 1864). Mabel's siblings were: Bertha Ray (1890-1964), Clarence J (b 1892), Bernice (b 1894), Clifford MacKay (b 1896), Geraldine F (b 1899), Robert (b 1901) and Marguerite (b 1907). The McEwen family lived in Sifton (1891), Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan (1901), on 28-40-10-W3 in Radisson RM, Saskatchewan (1906) and in the Radisson area in 1911.

At the time of the 1916 census, Mabel was enumerated as a roomer with the family of John and Alice Fawcett at 541 4th Ave N in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At that time she was employed as a stenographer with Acheson Durie and Wakeling, barrister & solicitors. In 1921 she was living with her parents and siblings at 521 9th St E in Saskatoon and was employed as a stenographer for G P Makaroff, barrister.

Mabel married Walter (Wyndham or Winteringham) Burton on 22 October 1923 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was born in the 4th quarter of 1891 in Hull, Yorkshire, England to John Burton (b 1854) and Sirema Winteringham (b 1854). In 1929 they were living at 220 25th St E in Saskatoon and Walter was employed as a traveler, freight agent for the Canadian National Railway (CNR). Nothing more could be found about Mabel and Walter.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Matcham/McAuslan/McEwen Tree.

As far as could be determined, Mabel was not directly related to the McAuslans, but is included in the same tree because her sister, Bertha, married Ernest Tregaskis. They had a son, Leonard, who married Jean E E McAuslan (1918-2005). Jean was the daughter of Ashley Thomas McAuslan, a brother of Robert John McAuslan who was discussed above. Some members of the Fawcett family with whom Mabel lodged in 1916 also signed the quilt.
