ROLAND D JACKSON,
VERNIE VINCENT, VELMA ELIZABETH and ORVAL ORTON JACKSON
Roland D Jackson was born on 9 August 1874 in Winchester, Stormont, Ontario to James Slater Jackson (1828-1912) and Clarissa Lang (1838-1922). Roland had nine siblings, David (1858-1914), Henry (1862-1930), Margaret Anna (b 1865), Charelene (b 1868), Caroline (1869-1923), Patterson (1869-1934), Elizabeth (Lizzie) (1872-1911), Albert Clinton (1876-1963) and Naomi (1880-1958).
Roland grew up on the family farm in Winchester and married Sarah Ellen Raney in Osgoode Township on 23 September 1896. Sarah was born on 5 March 1874 in Osgoode, Ontario to Robert Raney (1835-1909) and Jane Douglas (1835-1926). Sarah had four siblings, George (b 1865), Elisabeth (b 1868), Joseph (b 1870) and Margret (b 1873).
After their marriage, Roland and Sarah continued to farm in Winchester. They had three children, Vernie Vincent (1898-1968), Velma Elizabeth (1899-1986) and Orval Orton (1901-1973).
Around 1915, the family moved to Saskatoon where Roland was initially caretaker at King Edward School and they lived on the school site. Later Roland was employed by CNR, firstly as a baggage man at the station and then as a car repairman. They lived at 201 Ave F South. When the family moved to 908 Empress St in 1930s, Roland worked as a carpenter until retiring in about 1945. Both Roland and Sarah died in 1956, Roland on 3 January and Sarah on 23 May. They are both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
Vernie was born on 9 February 1898 in Maple Ridge, Stormont, Ontario. He served in the Voluntary Militia and then joined the Royal North Western Mounted police when he was eighteen in Alsack, Saskatchewan. He came to live in Saskatoon in 1920 and worked for the City as a clerk. Vernie married Adena/Adennia May Morris (b 1901) at about this time. Adena was born on 17 January 1901 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Walter Morris (1872-1916) and Everatta Gracie Darling Keller (1884-1934). Adena had four siblings, Beaulah (b 1904), Ross (b 1906), Hilda Alma (b 1908) and Dora Constance (b 1909).
Vernie and Adena had one daughter, Alverna Jacqueline (1922-2011). Vernie worked for the City rising to chief clerk after WWII. It seems that around 1940 either he separated from Adena or she died as he subsequently married Annie Findlay Wood (1914-1972). Annie was born in Saskatoon to George Wood (1883-1965) and Annie (b 1885). After his retirement, Vernie and Annie lived at 1523 Shannon Crescent, Saskatoon. Vernie died on 22 May 1968 and Annie died on 25 June 1972. They are both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
Velma was born on 15 October 1899 in Winchester, Dundas, Ontario. She worked at Modern Steam Laundry in Saskatoon in 1918 and later as a clerk for Imperial Oil. She married Robert "Jesse" Northcott probably in 1925. Jesse was born on 25 August 1902 in Middlesex, Ontario to Robert Thomas Northcott (1867-1924) and Minnie Black (b 1868). Jesse had three siblings, Fairy Ette (Fay) Northcott (1893-1970), Augustus George Clifford Northcott (1897-1899) and Leila Gertrude Northcott (b 1900). Jesse and Velma farmed in Snipe Lake, Kindersley. They had one son, Jack Dean (1927-2007).
Jesse died in Eston, Saskatchewan on 11 February 1978 and Velma died on 21 August 1986 also in Eston.
Orval was born on 22 March 1901 in Winchester, Dundas, Ontario. Orval also served in the Voluntary Militia, in 1913. Orval worked for some 40 years from 1924 for Wilson Stationery Co Ltd as bookkeeper, salesman and manager. Orval lived at 908 Empress Ave with his parents until his marriage to Thelma Bernice Miller in about 1940. We have been unable to trace Thelma’s parents. Orval and Thelma lived at 221 Main St and later 218 9th St E.
On his retirement, Orval and Thelma moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia where Orval died on 10 January 1973.
