SARAH ANN (ANNIE) HOLT née BINNS
Sarah Ann (Annie) Binns was born on 28 December 1868 in Lye, Old Swinford, Worcestershire, England to Joseph Binns (1825-1912) and Lucy Gauden (1835-1894). Annie had eight siblings, Joseph (1854-1916), James (1858-1930), Alice (1861-1944), Franklin (1863-1943), Frederick (Fred) (1866-1956), Robert Arthur (1871-1896), Herbert Edwin (1873-1909) and Richard Gauden (1876-1959). Annie was the last of the children born in England and Robert, the next child, was born in Kansas on 24 July 1871, so the family must have sailed to the US between 1869 and 1871, but no passenger records have been found.
From 1875, Joseph was farming in Ottawa, Kansas, USA. Lucy died on 19 March 1894 and was buried in Baxter Springs, Cherokee Co, Kansas. Joseph returned to England later the same year but was back in Kansas in 1900.
By 1906, the family had settled in Connaught RM, Saskatchewan where Joseph had a homestead grant issued for NW-34-46-15-W2 near Prince Albert on 12 November 1910. Joseph died on 20 October 1912 in Saskatoon and his body was taken to be buried alongside that of his wife in Baxter Springs.
Annie married Joseph Holt on 21 February 1900 in Severy, Greenwood Co, Kansas. Joseph was born on 8 January 1873 in Orange Co, Indiana, USA to Andrew Jackson Holt (1842-1878) and Lucinda Livengood (1850-1928). Joseph had one brother, Isaiah (Isa) (1874-1959) and one half-sister, Lutitia (Letty) Findley (1884-1955) born to Lucinda and her second husband George H Findley (1830-1907).
Annie and Joseph farmed in Fall River, Kansas after their marriage. They had three children, Irene Agnes (1901-1972), Raymond Herbert (1902-1983) and Thelma Winnifred (b 1903) born in Kansas. In 1905/6 they moved Canada and joined Annie’s father in Connaught RM. Annie and Joseph had a further daughter, Bertha “Alice” (b 1909). Joseph Holt had a homestead grant issued on 12 April 1918 for NW-24-47-15-W2. It seems that they also took over Annie’s father’s land after he died as they were living there in 1921.
Annie and Joseph retired to Saskatoon in 1940, living at 1120 22nd St W. Joseph died on 5 January 1948 and Annie died on 21 July 1951. They are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
