PRINGLE REDPATH AITCHISON

Pringle Redpath Aitchison was born on 14 May 1899 in Innerleithen, Peeblesshire, Scotland to James Charles Aitchison (1876-1916) and Elizabeth Morton Fleming (1878-1948). Pringle had seven siblings born in Scotland, Barbara Rae (1901-1977), Euphemia Fleming (1903-2000), Elizabeth Fleming (1905-2001), James Hermiston (1908-1994), Isabella (1909-1982), Mary Norma Fairfax (1911-2002), Janet Hermiston (1913-1916) and Thomas (1915-1916). James Sr immigrated to Canada, leaving Glasgow aboard SS ‘Hesperian’ and arriving in Quebec on 17 June 1911 before travelling on to Saskatoon.

Elizabeth and the children followed on SS ‘Scotian’ leaving Glasgow on 30 March 1912 and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 8 April 1912. The family lived at 1902 11th St W in Saskatoon. By 1914, James had resumed his trade as a carpenter and Pringle was working as a stenographer for Saturday Press Publishing Co.

James and Elizabeth had a further child, Thomas born on 7 July 1915 in Saskatoon. Thomas did not survive infancy and died on 6 May 1916.

On 25 June 1915, James Sr enlisted in the CEF. He joined the 114th Battalion as a private, service number 441507. He sailed with his unit on SS ‘Empress of Britain’ on 29 March 1916 bound for England. On 8 June he embarked for France and was stationed in Boulogne. It was here that he suffered a gun shot wound to his right leg; he was admitted to No3 Hospital, Boulogne on 30 September. James developed pneumonia and was shipped back to England being admitted to Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich, London on 13 October. He died two days later. He is buried in the cemetery in Innerleithen, Scotland.

Pringle worked as a cashier and then bookkeeper before marrying Rollin Henry Thorne Howes on 17 June 1924 in Saskatoon. Rollin was born on 19 November 1897 in Indian Head, Saskatchewan to Harry Howes (b 1866) and Sarah Ann Thorne (b 1867). Rollin had five siblings, Edgar William (1893-1939), James Nelson F (b 1896), Vivian Dulce Muriel (1900-1901), Olive Gwendolin Shornes (1905-1990) and Horrace John "Charles" (1908-1972). Rollin worked for Wm T Birney’s hardware store, also as a bookkeeper.

After their marriage, Pringle and Rollin lived at 408 24th St W for many years. They had three children, Donald (1924-1995) and twins Jean Elizabeth (1929-2000) and Shirley A (b 1929). Rollin remained with the Birney business eventually becoming proprietor. Rollin was president of the Saskatoon Industrial Exhibition in the 1960s. He was inducted to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1974.

Rollin died on 3 August 1980 and Pringle died on 14 February 1992, both in Saskatoon and are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
