EMMA MAY ALFORD
Emma May Parker was born on 27 May 1870 in Winchester, Dundas Co, Ontario to William Parker (1827-1895) and Lucy Wholehan (1833-1923). Emma had eight siblings, Lily (1851-1934), Elizabeth (1855-1917), James S (1859-1935), Jane (b 1860), Thomas (1862-1926), John (1867-1937), Harriet (Hattie) (b 1871) and Charles B (1873-1931). William farmed in the Winchester and Dundas area of Ontario.
Emma married Joseph Alford on 26 November 1890 in Winchester. Joseph was born on 8 July 1862 in Winchester to John Alford (1821-1885) and Elizabeth Hamilton (1829-1906). Joseph had seven siblings, Mary (b 1848 ), William (1850-1927), Amelia (b 1854 ), James (b 1856 ), John Henry (1859- 1933), Ann (b 1861 ) and Eliza (1867-1943). Joseph continued to farm in Winchester. Joseph and Emma had four children, Charles Ross (b 1891), John (1892-1892), Joseph Brock (1895-1897) and William Victor (b 1898).
Joseph arrived in Saskatoon in 1912 when he lived at 827 McPherson Avenue and worked as a traveller. A Joseph Alford was granted a section of land at SW-06-27-26-W3 RM Chesterfield No 261 on 17 November 1913. As this is some 300 km to the south-west of Saskatoon, it is questionable whether this is ‘our’ Joseph Alford.
The family moved to 811 McPherson Avenue in 1914. Joseph enlisted in CEF on 28 March 1916, aged 53 and joined the Canadian Forestry Battalion. He sailed for England aboard troop ship ‘Adriatic’ arriving on 30 May 1916. Joseph’s heath deteriorated, he was diagnosed with emphysema and general debility and returned to Canada in February 1918. He was discharged from service on 5 April 1918.
Joseph and Emma continued to live at 811 McPherson St, Saskatoon and Joseph was described as a farmer in the 1918 Henderson city directory.
No further information has been found for Joseph or Emma.
