HENRY (HARRY) LUDGATE

Henry (Harry) Ludgate was born on 12 February 1888 in Strangford, Down County, Ireland to Thomas Ludgate and Mary Jane Kerr. He had three siblings: Jane Catherine (b 1870), Francis Edward (Frank) (1884-1957) who immigrated to Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1908 and married Josephine Mary Butler (1886-1966) and Elizabeth Frances (Elsie) (1891-1975) who married Thomas Henry Large and was living in Devon, England in 1963.

Henry attended Bangor College and was certified in England as a banker. Henry boarded the SS 'Empress of Britain' on 15 December 1911 in Liverpool, England and arrived in St John, New Brunswick on 23 December 1911. When he first came to Saskatoon, he opened a branch of The Bank of Quebec. In 1916 he was living at 117 29th St W in Saskatoon and was Deputy Local Register for the Supreme Court. On 16 April 1918 he enlisted for WWI and served in the RAF. At that time, his father was living in Ingelside, Dundonald, Belfast, Ireland and was listed as his next of kin.

According to his obituary, he enrolled with the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 1919 and was admitted to the bar in 1924. Saskatoon Henderson Directories indicated that he lived at 706 Ave A N (1920) and the YMCA (1921-1925) and that he was employed as the Deputy Local Register until 1923. In 1924 he was listed as a barrister with Ludgate (Harry) and McDonald (A W).

Henry died on 24 October 1963 in Saskatoon and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. His obituary can be found here.
