AGNES ELLEN LEWIS née WESTON
Agnes Ellen Weston was born in second quarter 1873 in Dover, Kent, England to Thomas Weston (1840-1909) and Charlotte Clements (1851). Her siblings were: George Henry (1871-1964), Elizabeth (Eliza) (b 1875), Thomas (b 1879), William (1882-1970), John (b 1885), Ann (b 1888), Herbert (b 1892) and Elsie (b 1895). In 1881 the Weston family was living in Snaith and Cowick, Yorkshire, England.
Agnes married John Alfred Lewis on 24 July 1895 in Riccall, Yorkshire. John was born in second quarter 1870 in Osgodby, Yorkshire to John Lewis (b 1837) and Maria (b 1837). His siblings were: Emma (b 1860), Alice (b 1861), George (b 1862), Mary (b 1864), William (b 1866), Elizabeth (b 1872), Walter (b 1874) and Robert (b 1877). The Lewis family lived in Osgodby in 1871, Drax in 1881 and Osgodby in 1891.
In 1901 Agnes and John lived in Barlby, Yorkshire with their two children, Florence (b 1896) and Robert (b 1898). On 10 March 1904 the Lewis family, including a two year old daughter, Agnes, boarded SS 'Tunisian' in Liverpool, England. They arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 15 March 1904 and gave their final destination as Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1906 they were living on homestead land SE-32-30-24-W2 in the RM of Wreford, Saskatchewan, but neither of the two youngest children were listed in the 1906 census - or in any later census. The homestead grant was issued on 17 March 1908. Agnes' brother John Weston homesteaded on adjoining land NW-5-31-24-W2 in the same RM and had his homestead grant issued on 18 January 1909. This land was quite near the town of Venn, Saskatchewan. Florence lived with her parents on the homestead until 1916, but was gone in 1921.
John died in Wadena, Saskatchewan on 15 May 1946 and was buried in Wadena Cemetery. Venn, Saskatchewan is 135 km from Saskatoon which is the nearest large city. It would not be unreasonable for someone in that area to come to Saskatoon from time to time to do business. Agnes was the only candidate in or near Saskatoon who could be found that may have signed the quilt A E Lewis.
