SYDNEY LONG
Sydney Long was born circa 1891 in Ontario. He married Chrissie MacIntosh (1891-1980) circa 1918. Chrissie was also born in Ontario.
On 28 Aug 1917, Manitoba Morning Free Press, Winnipeg included the following in the Personal and Social section: "Sydney Long and Miss C McIntosh were the guests of Mr and Mrs M D Long and family over the week end”. We have been unable to identify Mr & Mrs M D Long.
The first record that could be found for Sydney in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was in the 1918 Henderson City Directory. He lived at #5 804 McPherson from 1918 to 1924 and was employed as a brakeman for the CNR (Canadian National Railway) from 1921 to 1922, a traveler for Imperial Tobacco in 1923 and a salesman for National Cash Register in 1924. From 1925 to 1935 he was listed at 508 Dufferin and continued to be a sales agent for National Cash Register during those years.
In the 1921 census he was enumerated at #5 Webster Apartments (really DunRobin apartments in the Webster Block) and gave his occupation as a tobacco traveler. At that time he was married to Chrissie and had a one year old daughter Donalda Isabel (Dona) (1919-2012). Dona's obituary indicated that she was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, so it is presumed that the family moved there in 1936. On 2 March 1939, Winnipeg Free Press included the following: "Mr & Mrs Sydney Long, Dorchester Ave have as their guest Mrs William Oliver of Saskatoon who is returning from Montreal where she has been visiting her sons, Dr Austin Oliver and Dr Howard Oliver. Her daughter, Marjorie, who accompanied her to Montreal will return later in the year. . .". This confirms Sydney was living at Dorchester Ave, Winnipeg in 1939. He and Chrissie were at Apartment 25 785 Dorchester Ave in 1940. Mrs William Oliver was Adelaide Hatfield Oliver née Kee (1877-1960) married to William Oliver (1870-1960), a physician. They lived at 415 10th St E, Saskatoon at this time. We have found no connection between the Long and Oliver families.
In 1945 they were living at 453 Cambridge Street and in 1953-1956 at 538 Elm Street in Winnipeg. Sydney died between 1956 and 1962, presumably in Winnipeg. Chrissie was listed as a widow at the Elm Street address in 1962. She continued to live there until at least 1968 and died in Ottawa, Ontario in 1980.
Dona was born on 17 December 1919 in Saskatoon. She married Herbert "Alan" Phillips (1917-2006) circa 1945. They had three boys, one of whom was Roger Alan (Rod) (1951-2007). Dona died in Ottawa, Ontario on 5 January 2012. Her obituary can be found here.
