ETHEL MAY KELLINS née PLATO

Ethel May Plato was born on 20 February 1891 in Waterloo, Ontario to Cornelius E Plato (b 1863) and Ann Jane Lenox (1869-1908). Ethel had one brother, Edward Henry (1895-1972). Ethel grew up in Fort Erie, Welland, Ontario where her father was a merchant.

According to her obituary, Ethel married Francis (Frank) William Kellins in 1907 in Welland, Ontario. Frank was born on 24 June 1890 in Wainfleet, York, Ontario to Elisha Charles Kellins (1839-1899) and Elizabeth Dodge (b 1857). Frank had the following half-siblings from his father’s first marriage to Catharine Hislip (b 1846); Michael (b 1870), Richard (1872-1901), Abram (1873-1919), Maud (b 1876) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) (b 1878).

Frank and Ethel came to Saskatoon in 1911. Frank first found work as a carpenter but worked for CPR as a switchman and then yardmaster from 1914 onwards. Frank and Ethel had nine children, Dorothy Inez, Francis (Frank), Irene, James, John, Patricia, Kenneth Murrell Lennox (1909-1983), Hazel (b 1912) and William Richard (Bill) (1929-1973).

Frank worked as a yardmaster until his retirement in 1954 after forty years service for CPR.

Ethel was very involved with her community. The following is taken from her obituary:

Mrs. Kellins was a life member of St. Paul's United Church and the U. C. W. and represented the congregation at the ceremony of the burning of the mortgage on the first St. Paul's Church in Sutherland. Mrs. assisted in the organization of the Oliver Lodge Auxiliary and served on the Auxiliary for ten years. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, having been a member since the Auxiliary was organized in 1917.

Frank died on 11 February 1984 in Saskatoon. He and Ethel had been married for 77 years. Ethel died on 7 June of the following year.
