SAMUEL THOMAS KEMPTHORNE and HELEN IRENA/EILEEN KEMPTHORNE née DOHERTY

Samuel Thomas Kempthorne was born on 4 May 1876 in Whitby, Ontario to Charles Kempthorne (1846-1917) and Margaret Balson (b 1848). Samuel had two siblings, Edith Mary (b 1878) and Margaretta (May) (b 1891). Samuel grew up in Whitby West, Ontario where his father was a blacksmith.

By 1901, Samuel had come west to Indian Head, Assiniboia, Saskatchewan where he was a clerk in a hardware store. In 1908, Samuel was in Saskatoon in partnership with Fred Oliver as Hardware Merchants. They took a full page advertisement in the Henderson City Directory for 1908. Two years later, Samuel was proprietor of his own business, Shelf & Heavy Hardware. The business address was 157-159 2nd Ave - soon to become Kempthorne Block.

Samuel married Helen Irena/Eileen Doherty in about 1912. Helen was born on 17 June 1889 in Clinton, Huron, Ontario to William Doherty (1840-1924) and Agnes Jane (Annie) Depew (1847-1931). Annie had nine siblings, Margaret Hannah (1872-1953), John Peter (1872-1899), William George (1876-1952), Lena Maud Louise (b 1879), Ethel May (b 1881), James Edward (b 1885), Garnet C (b 1886), Clarence Victor (b 1892) and Algernon Dewitt (1893-1957).

Samuel and Helen lived at 892 Spadina Crescent whilst Samuel was running his hardware business. After 1916, Samuel became a farmer and they lived at 539 24th St E.

Samuel and Helen had four children, John Doherty (1914-1918), Charles William (1916-1918), Donald Graham (b 1921) and Margaret (1923-2011).

Samuel and Helen appeared in the 3rd Avenue Methodist Church roll in 1914. Samuel’s two sisters, Edith and May had been on the roll since 1907 and 1909 respectively.

In 1940, Samuel and Helen (with Samuel’s sister Edith) were living in Whitby, Ontario and Samuel was listed as an apiarist.

By 1945, Samuel had retired and they were living at 150 Bedford Road, St Paul, Ontario.

No further information has been found about the Kempthorne family.
