HODGINS/McKENZIE/REID/WHYTOCK
Anna Sinclar (Annie) Whytock was born on 14 September 1885 in Culross Twp, Bruce County, Ontario to James Whytock (1856-1943) and Margaret Elizabeth (Maggie) Hemingway (1865-1929). She was the eldest of five children. Her siblings were: Jane Watson (Jennie) (b 1887), James "Wesley" (1888-1964), Joseph Howard (1895-1955) and Margaret "Merle" (Maggie) (1865-1929).
Anna Whytock married Donald McKenzie on 26 March 1913 in Culross Twp, Bruce County. Donald was born on 24 October 1874 in Teeswater, Ontario to Alexander (Sandy) McKenzie (1835-1904) and Elizabeth (Betsy) McRae (1842-1911). He had three siblings: Annabella (1867-1934), Catherine Elizabeth (Bessie) (b 1878) and William (1887-1950). At the time of the 1921 census, Anna and Donald were living in Culross Twp and had no children. Anna died on 15 December 1967 and Donald on 9 June 1938. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery, Teeswater, Ontario.
William McKenzie was born on 8 July 1887 in Bruce, Ontario. He married Mabel Donaldson on 7 January 1914 in Bruce County. Mabel was born to David Donaldson (1857-1925) and Jane Elliott (1859-1941) on 6 September 1888 in Bruce County. She had three brothers, Robert John (1884-1973), John Elliot (1886-1928) and William Donaldson (1895-1965). William and Mabel had two sons, Alex (1914-1991) and William (b 1915). William died on 13 June 1950 and Mabel on 22 December 1967, both in Ontario. They are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery, Teeswater, Ontario.
They also appear in the Culross Baker/Baptist/Donaldson/Elliot/Melvin/Murray/Rome/Standish Tree.
Wesley Whytock was born on 25 March 1888 in Bruce County. He married Margaret "Edna" Elliott on 29 September 1920 in Bruce County. Edna was born to Robert Elliott (1861-1926) and Margaret Robb (1861-1905) on 29 March 1901 in Kinloss, Ontario. She had four siblings Sarah Esther (1894-1930), John Ernest (1895-1897), Robert E (b 1897) and Samuel Lloyd (1899-1899) and three half siblings, Elizabeth Jane (Jennie) (1888-1958), Richard (b 1890) and Joseph Francis (b 1908). In 1921 Wesley and Edna were living in Culross Twp. and had no children. Wesley died on 22 July 1964 and Edna in Teeswater in 1981. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
Merle Whytock was born on 2 January 1897 in Bruce County. She married Harvey "Earl" Hodgins on 10 March 1920 in Bruce County. Earl was born on 12 July 1895 in Holyrood, Bruce County to Joseph Hodgins (1861-1934) and Mary "Louisa" Switzer (1868-1937). In 1921 Merle and Harvey were living in Kinloss Twp. Merle died in 1970 and Earl in Stanley Twp, Huron, Ontario in 1955. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
Earl Hodgins had one sister, Coral "Elva" who was born on 9 July 1899 in Kinloss, Bruce County. Elva married Thomas Henry Emery on 11 April 1931 in Summit, Ohio. Thomas was born on 8 November 1888 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to J Smith Emery and Jennie Parfett. It would appear that Elva and Thomas Emery lived in Summit, Ohio after their marriage. Elva died in Akron, Ohio on 29 May 1972. No death date was found for Thomas.
Janet Whytock was born on 9 March 1851 in Ontario to James Whytock (1812-1912) and Janet Agnes (Jane) Watson (b 1822). Her siblings were: Joseph (b 1848), Jane (Jennie) (1853-1938), James (1856-1943), Agnes (b 1860) and William (b 1863). Three of her brother James' children also had their names on the quilt and were discussed earlier.
Janet married James Reid on 11 February 1873 in Culross Twp. James, the son of John Reid (1778-1851) and Mary Ann Guthrie (1798-1867), was born on 25 October 1825 in Tannadice, Angus, Scotland. His siblings were: Mary (1819-1912), Alexander (1821-1899), David (1822-1902), Thomas (1827-1917) and John (1831-1911).
It is possible that the Mr J Reid name on the quilt was added in memory of James who died 8 July 1913 in Teeswater, but as he had died about 5 years before the quilt was made, it seems unlikely.
James and Janet had 10 children: Jessie (1874-1899), James J (1875-1963), Mary Agnes (b 1877), Alexander Guthrie (1878-1968), Josephine (1880-1962), Thomas H (b 1883), David William (1883-1958), Robert A (b 1887), Andrew Bonar (1889-1917) and William (1891-1958).
Another possibility for the Mr J Reid signature is their son, James J. However, his wife signed her name Mrs J J Reid and he usually used the initials J J, so it is more likely that Mr J Reid is a person who has yet to be identified.
Janet died on 16 September 1935 in Bruce County.
James J Reid was born on 23 February 1875 in Teeswater. He married Georginia Emily Million on 23 December 1903 in Bruce County. She was born to George Million (b 1851) and Rachel McDermid (b 1856) on 23 April 1881 in Bruce County. Her siblings were: Janet (b 1875), Catherine Ann (Kate) (1878-1893) and William Edward (Wilburt) (b 1886). James J and Georginia were found in both the 1911 and 1921 census records with no children listed. Georginia died on 7 July 1962 and James J on 28 October 1963. James J, Georginia and James' parents were all buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
