HOWE FAMILY

James Howe (1848-1936) was born in Quebec and came west to Bruce County in the 1870s to ply his trade as a blcksmith. He married Mary McKague (1849-1909) on 21 February 1877 in Culross. James and Mary had five children,

William John (1877-1958),
Emma Mary (1879-1966),
Elizabeth (1881-1952),
Annie Laura (1883-1974) and
Leslie James (1886-1961).

William John Howe was born on 29 November 1877 in Teeswater. He married Cora Cross Chilton on 28 January 1910 in Wellington, Ontario. Cora was born on 15 February 1893 in Wellington to Cyril Chilton (1855-1918) and Ann Cross (1860-1938). Cora had six siblings, Sarah Ann (1879-1969), Esther/Essie/Essa Jane (b 1881), William Henry (1883-1974), Margaret May (1886-1946), Susan Lolla (b 1895) and Rosella (1898-1956). William farmed prior to his marriage, but by 1921 he was a traveller.

William and Cora had one son, Herbert Fenwick, born on 22 February 1913. Herbert died of appendicitis aged eleven on 11 September 1924.

Cora died on 1 June 1924 in Wellington, Ontario. William remarried on 21 September 1927 to Ann Kirkpatrick. Ann was born in 1907 in Scotland to James Kirkpatrick and Margaret Johnson. She likely sailed from Glasgow on SS ‘Metagama’ arriving in Montreal on 2 October 1926. After William died in 1958, Ann married Cedric Ernest Green (1906-1977). Ann died in 1990.

Leslie James Howe was born on 27 October 1886 in Teeswater. He continued to live with his father after his mother died and later farmed in Formosa, Bruce County. He did not marry. He died on 20 October 1961 and is buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.

As an aside, Mary McKague was a member of the Armstrong/McKague family whose story is told here and Cora Cross Chilton’s sister, Ester Jane married into the Baker/Baptist/Donaldson/ Elliot/Melvin/Murray/Rome/Standish family whose story is told here.

There are two embroidered names for Leslie Howe on the quilt in blocks NE B2 and SW B3, but we have found only the one Leslie Howe living in the Culross area.

The family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title Culross Howe Tree.
