John E Hewitt was born on 5 November 1856 in Kincardine, Bruce County to John Hewitt (1826-1904) and Jane Walsh (1836-1877). John E had eleven siblings, William (1855-1918), Elizabeth (1858-1877), Charles (1860-1883), Ellen Jane (1862-1940), Robert Thomas (1864-1931), James (1866-1890), George (1868-1868), Mary Ann (b 1869), George Wellington (1871-1947), Lydia Alice (1874-1945) and Samuel Stephen Bland (1877-1934).
John E married Rebecca Maria Carleton on 2 November 1887 in Kincardine. Rebecca was born in about 1868 in Kinloss to James Carleton (1840-1920) and Martha Williams France (1836-1911). Rebecca had four siblings, Sarah Jane (b 1863), Catherine Elizabeth (1866-1944), Emmeline (Emma) (1871-1935) and John James (1874-1879). John and Rebecca had one child, Martha Gertrude (Gertie) (1889-1954).
Rebecca died in about 1890. Subsequently John married Martha "Etta" Bradley on 3 May 1893 in Kincardine. Etta was born on 14 April 1869 in Bervie, Kincardine to Samuel Bradley (1812-1890) and Debora Whaley (1825-1907). Etta had eight siblings, William Henry (1846-1876), Elizabeth (b 1848), Margaret J (1852-1930), Albert F (1852-1893), Alice (1857-1927), Sarah (1860-1907), Mary Ellen (1862-1881) and Thomas (1865-1932).
John and Etta had five children,
Robert John (1894-1960),
Debra Ann (Annie, Deby) (1898-1925),
Thomas Charles (Tom) (1900-1977),
William "Clarence" (b 1905) and
Lydia "Alice" (1910-1988).
John farmed in Kincardine until his death on 10 July 1923. Etta died on 3 October 1935. They are both buried in Kincardine Cemetery.
