Mrs NANCY BROWN née McDOUGALL
Annie (Nancy) McDougall was born on 10 March 1860 in Caledon, Peel County to Angus McDougall (1833-1893) and Elizabeth Porterfield (1837-1880). Nancy had eight siblings, John (1858-1928), Mary (1862-1944), Catherine (1864-1930), Duncan (1866-1892), Thomas (1868-1954), Sarah (1871-1941), Alexander Clarence (1873-1941) and Elizabeth (1875-1953).
Nancie’s family moved to Saugeen, Bruce County by 1871 where her father Angus continued to ply his trade as a mason.
Nancie married Richard Ellis Brown, a teacher, on Christmas Day 1880 in Lucknow, Bruce County. Nancie and Richard had seven children,
Albert J Ellis (1881-1935),
Myron James (b 1883),
Oliver Angus Henry (1885-1954),
Howard Duncan (1888-1946),
Ethel Elizabeth (1891-1957),
Duneda May (1895-1982),
Annie Grace (1898-1975) and
Edith.
Nancie and Richard lived in Ashfield, Huron County for many years. Richard continued to teach into old-age. In the 1916 census, he is still described as a teacher, aged 69 and living at 363 Edmonton St, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Richard died on 5 August 1918 in Winnipeg.
Nancie’s brother John, sisters Catherine and Elizabeth had continued to live in Bruce County and is postulated that following Richard’s death in 1918, Nancie may have stayed with one or other of them and so found her name on the quilt.
Nancie died on 23 October 1949 at 1563 Inverness St, New Westminster, British Columbia.
