WILLIAM BROWN & Mrs WILLIAM BROWN

William John Brown was born on 18 October 1877 in Pine River, Huron Twp, Bruce County to James Brown (1850-1933) and Margaret Ray (1857-1906). William had five siblings, Albert (1874-1953), Mary (1880-1881), Elizabeth Agnes (1883-1901), Annie (1883-1972) and Winifred (1887-1965).

William was living on the family farm in Huron Twp when he married Edith Mary Humphreys on 26 December 1906. Edith was born on 9 June 1880 in Huron Twp to George Henry Humphreys (1844-1924) and Emily Swan Johnstone (1848-1937). Emily had six siblings, Frederick Albert (1874-1958), George Herbert (1876-1959), Louise Emily (1879-1902), Clara (b 1882), Laura (1885-1980) and Florence Henrietta (b 1887).

William and Edith had three children,

Viola Eileen (1908-1989),
Elva (1915-2004) and
Lorne M (1918-2002).

William farmed on Concession A in Huron Twp until 1942 when he moved to Lurgan where he operated a sawmill.

Edith died in May 1958 in Huron Twp and William died on 5 December 1959 also in Huron Twp.

We have identified two couples who may be named on the quilt as Wm Brown and Mrs Wm Brown. As we have no way of deciding between them, both couples are included here.
Candidate 1

William John Brown was born on 12 August 1854 in Clarke Twp, Durham County to William James Brown (1800-1885) and Elizabeth Ferguson (1826-1905). William had four siblings, Thomas (1856-1924), Elizabeth (1860- Eleanor (Ellie) (b 1867) and George (b 1870).

It seems likely that William and his brother Thomas served in the 11th Regiment, Argenteuil Rangers as volunteers in 1874. On his gravestone William is described as Major William John Brown.

William married Annie Hawke on 5 February 1896 in Manvers Twp, Durham County. Annie was born on 28 February 1877 in Brotton, Yorkshire, England to James Hawke (1844-1877) and Susan Harr (1843-1906). Annie had two brother, William (1869-1873) and James Ernest (b 1871).

William and Annie had seven children,

James Rowland Clement (1896-1958),
Sylvia Larena (1898-1987),
William Henry Conrad (1900-1957),
Earl Carlyle (b 1904),
Thomas Leroy (1906-1978),
Verner Clayton (1910-1975) and
Marvin Kitchener (1916-1941).

William farmed in Bruce County. William died 19 May 1933 in Huron Twp. Annie died in 1954 in St Jacob’s, Ontario.

Marvin Kitchener Brown served with the RAF as a fighter pilot in WWII. He died in a flying accident on 21 February 1941. See Battle of Britain London Monument and Ipswich War Memorial.
