MARY LUCINDA FAIRBAIRN & GEORGE FRANCIS FAIRBAIRN

Mary Lucinda Fairbairn was born on 9 January 1871 in Culross to David Fairbairn (1833-1914) and Alice Whewall/Whesville (b 1837). Mary had five siblings, Bertha E (b 1865), Hester/Hesba M (1868-1918), Blanche (b 1868), Luzetta/Yetta L (b 1875) and Maud (b 1877).

From 1901, Mary was a dress-maker and living on her own in Teeswater but by 1911 whilst still a dress-maker she was living with her father and two cousins, Gordon and George, in Teeswater. At this time her mother was living in Winnipeg with Mary’s sister Maud and Maud’s son, Robert.

Mary’s father, David, died on 12 February 1914 in Teeswater. Mary died on 30 March 1962, probably in Teeswater. She is buried in the Culross/Teeswater Cemetery.

Mary’s sister, Blanche was born on 27 April 1868 in Culross. She married James Frederick Roger Fairbairn in Montreal in 1897. James was born on 25 January 1871 in Peterborough, Ontario to John McCullough Fairbairn (1840-1874) and Jane Roger (1843-1906). James had three siblings, Elizabeth Morrice (1869-1878), Isabella Haultain (b 1871) and John Morrice Roger (1873-1954).

Blanche and James had two children,

Thomas “Gordon” (b 1898) and
George Francis (1901-1968).

James trained as a doctor and served as a captain in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during WWI. It is possible that Blanche died around 1920, as James was working as a surgeon on the SS ‘Makura’ sailing between Vancouver and Sidney, Australia during 1920 and 1921. He them settled in Australia and married Agnes Elizabeth Phillips (1883-1953) in 1927 in Sydney. James and Agnes sailed to Vancouver in SS ‘Aorangi’ in August 1931. James died in October 1932 in Peterborough where he had been born. Agnes returned to Australia and died there in 1953.

George Francis Fairbairn was born on 7 March 1901 in Montreal, Quebec. In 1911 he and his brother were living with their uncle’s family - see above.

George moved to the US seeking work in September 1925, giving his occupation as printer on crossing the boarder. George married Dorothy J Thomas on 24 February 1926 in Manhattan, New York. Dorothy was born on 20 April 1900 in Doranceton, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA to Richard Thomas (1878-1958) and Lilian (b 1878). Dorothy had one brother,

Ralph Paine (1897-1958)
and two half-siblings to Richard’s second wife, Bertha Pfancook/PfanKuch (1889-1972),
Mildred (1911-2001) and
William (b 1923).

George and Dorothy had three children,

Dorothy B (b 1927),
George R (1927-2012) and
Marion J (b 1935).

George worked as a printer in the newspaper industry in New York in 1940, living at 617 W 204th St, Manhattan. George died in Rhinebeck, Duchess, New York in June 1968.

As an aside, James Frederick Roger Fairbairn’s father Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn (1840-1874) was an Ontario lawyer and politician. See here. And his brother John Morrice Roger Fairbairn (1873-1954) was the Chief Engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railroad between 1918 and 1939. See here.
