HAROLD LINKLATER

Harold Linklater was born on 11 June 1901 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Charles Patrick Linklater (b 1858) and Margaret Elizabeth McDougall (b 1851). Harold had two siblings, Elizabeth Gertrude (b 1894) and David Charles (b 1896) and three half-siblings born to his father’s first wife, Frank (1880-1915), Mary (b 1883) and Ellen Som (Nellie) (1890-1985).

There is some uncertainty about Harold date of birth; a birth certificate states he was born on 11 June 1901 however he did not appear with the rest of his family in the 1901 census for Manitoba scheduled to start on 31 March 1901 and be completed within 30 days. When Harold enlisted in the CEF on 23 January 1917, he gave his date of birth as 26 December 1898. When Harold married in 1920, he admitted to an age of 19 years.

Harold married Alice Bever Rankin on 7 August 1920 in York, Ontario. Alice was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1900 to Ivie Mackie Rankin (b 1876) and Margaret Muir McKean (b 1877). Alice had four siblings, Mary (b 1895), Thomas McKean (b 1896), Ivie Mackie Jr (b 1900) and Margaret (b 1904). Alice’s parents had come to Canada in 1907 and then the five children had sailed on SS ‘Cassandra’, arriving in Quebec on 18 September 1912.

Nothing further is known about Harold and Alice. We have found no connection between Harold and the Culross district, nevertheless he is included as the best candidate for this name on the quilt.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title Culross Linklater Tree.

We found no connection between this family and that of Mrs J Linklater whose story is told here.
