HENRY RICHARD PERKINS
Henry Richard Perkins was born on 16 March 1852 in East Stonehouse, Devon, England to Richard Perkins (1816-1888) and Mary Chapple (1810-1901). Mary had four children by her first marriage to Francis Pengelly Chapple (1810-1844), John Francis (1836-1889), Elizabeth Charlotte (1838-1911), Emma (b 1840) and Jane (b 1843).
Henry was nineteen when he sailed from Plymouth, Devon, England to Canada on SS ‘Hector’, arriving in Quebec on 11 June 1872. Henry married Mary Helson Moffat on 31 March 1876 in Bowmanville, Northumberland County, Ontario. Mary was born on 2 April 1856 in Bowmanville to Herbert Moffat (1818-1887) and Harriet Helson (1839-1912). Mary had five siblings, Robert (1858-1930), David (1860-1930), Elizabeth Jane (1865-1922), Annie/Jessie (b 1867) and Sarah (b 1870).
In 1881, Henry was farming in Howick, Huron County but perhaps this was not a success as in 1891 he was a labourer living in Turnberry, Huron County and by 1901 a drover living in Teeswater, Bruce County. Henry and Mary had four children,
Frances (Frank) Richard (1877-1957),
Russel Thomas (1878-1945),
Elsie Mary (1880-1944) and
Olive Elizabeth (1885-1924).
Mary died on 11 October 1944 and Henry died on 26 June 1945, both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
