JOHN JOSEPH PURVIS

John Joseph Purvis was born on 1 November 1858 probably in Kinloss, Bruce County to John Purvis (1828-1864) and Mary Ann Corrigan (1834-1878). John had three siblings, Elizabeth (1861-1930), Ellen (1862-1923) and Susan (1863-1940).

John Purvis was the reeve of Kinloss from 1856-1863. [See ElectricScotland]

Following the death of John Purvis Sr in 1864, Mary was left with four children aged 6, 9, 10 and 11 years. She kept the family together on the farm and then when Mary died in 1878, the children stayed together and later ran the hotel in Kinloss.

Ellen, married John McDonnell (1862-1935) in about 1885 and they moved to Kansas, USA.

In 1891, John was an auctioneer and Elizabeth and Susan were keeping house.

From at least 1911, had his own farm in Kinloss as well as being an auctioneer; his sisters kept house and later Susan ran a local store.

John did not marry and died suddenly on 25 February 1930 and is buried in St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Kinloss.
