James Barnsley was born on 4 January 1878 at Greenlow Farm, Aldwark, Derbyshire, the son of James Henry Barnsley & Margaret Jane Ann Morton. He had three brothers, John Morton (b 1876), William Henry (b 1879) & Isaac (b 1879) and two sisters Margaret Jane (b 1874) & Elizabeth Ellen (b 1884).
In 1902 he married Milly Wood at Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire. Milly was born on 19 March 1874 in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England to William & Hannah Wood. She had two brothers, Charles Henry (b 1870) & Joseph (b 1872) and a sister, Kate (b 1878). James & Milly had one son, Harry Wood Barnsley (b 1904) in Ashton under Lyne.
James, Milly and Harry came to Canada with James’ brother William on SS ‘Victorian’ arriving in Quebec on 20 May 1910, bound for Winipeg, Manitoba. Also travelling with them was Frederick Morten Barnsley (b 1907), the son of James’ brother Isaac.
James and family settled in Saskatoon, initially at 208 31st St and later they moved to 1319 Ave B North. Later they moved back to 31st St to no 119. James worked as a repairman for Cockshut Plow.
James died on 25 October 1952 and Milly died on 29 June 1956; they were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
