THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MARY ANN ELIZABETH BARROWS née PARKER

Mary Ann Elizabeth Parker was born on 19 December 1880 in Wyoming, Lambton, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Robert Parker & Emma Stevenson.

Joseph Ferdinand Barrows was born in December 1869 in Himley, Staffordshire, England, the son of Joseph & Jane Barrows. He travelled to Canada in 1886, was back in the UK for the 1891 census where his occupation was given as lock maker and must have returned across the Atlantic as he departed New York for Liverpool in December 1895. By December 1898 he was again sailing from New York to Liverpool. The passenger records indicate he was married to Mary A E Parker and described as ‘traveller’ - an appropriate designation! Perhaps this was a honeymoon trip.

Their daughter Jessie Constance Jane Barrows was born on 2 November 1899 in Waukesha, Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA and they were resident in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1900 where Joseph was an inn-keeper.

In 1911 the family were in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan where Joseph was a grain buyer for Maple Leaf Elevator Co.

In 1919, Henderson’s Saskatoon directory has Joseph as grain buyer, residing at 302 25th St E. This would tie in with Mary AE signing the quilt.

In 1919-20 Joseph made a brief trip to England. He arrived in Southampton on 8 December 1919 and left again on 25 February 1920.

At this time Mary AE was residing at Sylvia Court, Vancouver, BC.

Joseph continued to visit the UK on business right up to 1947. He died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 18 March 1948.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Barrows Tree.
