THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

It is impossible to determine who signed the quilt "Warner". Only two Warner families could be found living in Saskatoon around 1918. An Anglican family, headed by William Thomas Warner had lost a son during the war and it is possible that someone representing the entire family signed the surname in memory of him. According to the Saskatoon Henderson Directory published in 1918, Frank was a press feeder for the ‘Phoenix’ newspaper, Norah was a steno for Imperial Oil and father, William, was a clerk at the Land Titles office. Many of the business people in downtown Saskatoon, regardless of their religion, signed the quilt, so this would make any of these three very viable candidates. The Prucell William Warner family was Methodist which might make one think that someone from that family was the most likely signer. However, many of the signers were not Methodist and many of the Methodists living in Saskatoon, even those that attended 3rd Ave Methodist Church, did not sign the quilt.

Purcell William (Percy) Warner was born on 27 October 1884 in Dundas, Ontario to Nelson Conrad Warner (1855-1934) and Jessie Jane Countryman (1854-1938). He married Kate Dolphin on 19 November 1915 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was born on 26 July 1884 in Southampton, Hampshire, England to Ralph Dolphin (1831-1893) and Fanny Silvester (1846-1884). The Warner family lived in Saskatoon at 120a Ave D South in 1916 and at 133 Ave H South in 1921. Nelson Leslie was born on 7 November 1917 in Saskatoon. He married Joyce E Maybury (1915-1993) and died on 28 January 2010 in Saskatoon. Percy Arthur was born on 26 September 1919 in Saskatoon and married Nelda Lindberg. He died on 28 August 1998 in Saskatoon. Edith Florence was born on 24 January 1970 in Saskatoon and married Ken McPherson. She died on 24 January 1970 in Saskatoon. Purcell on 14 December 1972 and Kate on 16 February 1958. Both died in Saskatoon and are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
