THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

EVA M WATSON

Evelyn Eva Maud McNair was born in May 1885 in Ireland. Census records indicates that she immigrated to Canada in about 1905. She married William Edmondson Watson on 23 July 1907 in Pipestone, Manitoba. William was born on 12 September 1881 in Monifieth, Angus, Scotland to Alexander Findlay Watson and Margaret Edmondson. His immigration date ranged from 1902 to 1905 in various census records.

In 1908, daughter Mabel was born in Maryfield, Saskatchewan. Herbert A F (b 1909) and Jean Evelyn (b 1913) were also born in Saskatchewan. The Watson family lived at 13-6-W3 in Shamrock RM in 1911 and 1916 and in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1921. In 1921, William's father, Alexander F Watson was living with them. Eva died on 22 January 1928. William subsequently married Jessie Alexander Cumming (1884-1960). Jessie's British Columbia death registration indicated that she was still married and that she had lived in Burnaby, British Columbia for the last 20 years. William died on 6 February 1965 at an unknown location. William, Eva, Jessie and William's father Alexander are all buried in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Evangeline Watson was born on 22 March 1884 in Little Durham, England to Rev Albert Thomas Watson (1858-1937) and Mary Ann Spratley (1855-1914). Her siblings were a still born baby (1882), Albert Theodore (1885-1947), Florence Marian (1887-1892) and Alice Irene (1897-1932). The 1901 census indicated that Evangeline and her parents immigrated to Canada in 1885. This must have been before October because a brother was born in Ontario in October of that year. Her father was a Baptist minister. 1891 and 1901 found the Watson family in Halimand Township and Colborne, Northumberland County, Ontario, respectively. Evangeline may be a woman enumerated in Toronto, Ontario in 1921, but she was a boarder and there was no other information available to verify that she was the same woman. A 1937 border crossing record confirmed that Evangaline, who was living in Toronto at that time, was the sister of Albert Theodore Watson who was living in Saskatoon. He and his family was found in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan census records in 1916 and 1921, so it is possible that Evangeline, who was not married by 1937, may have been in Saskatoon for a visit and may have been the person who signed the quilt Eva M Watson.

Evangeline’s family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Watson 7 Tree.

Only two possible candidates could be found for the Eva M Watson quilt signature. Evelyn Eva Maud Watson née McNair is one possibility but there is no evidence she ever visited Saskatoon. Secondly, Evangeline Watson is a possibility as she lived in Saskatoon but no evidence has been found of her using the name Eva nor of an explanation for the second initial ‘M’.
