Leonard Alfred Hillyard was born on 15 May 1891 in Dorking, Surrey, England. He was an automobile mechanic living at 720 Mulvoy Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba when he enlisted for WWI on 20 March 1916. Winifred Daisy Hillyard was born on 26 October 1892 in Sutton, Surrey, England. She married Norman Keith Holtby on 6 July 1916, in Saskatoon. Mary “Ethel” King, the wife of Norman’s brother, Edgar Gray Holtby, was written onto the quilt as Ethel Holtby. She was born on 26 March 1892 in Smithville, Saskatchewan to David Stanley King and Elenor Brawley. By 1901, the King family had moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Ethel and Edgar married on 15 October 1913 in Saskatoon. At the time of the 1916 census, they were farming land in Senlac RM located in 40-26-W3 Meridian. A daughter, Jean Eleanor, was born on 5 October 1917 in Senlac. The 1921 census found the family of three living at 235 Ave H North in Saskatoon where Edgar was a street railway clerk. Nelson married Ruth Frances Hoadley in Portland on 29 June 1931 and remained there for the rest of his life. She was born on 22 October 1908 in Portland to George W and Edna B Hoadley. Nelson and Ruth had a daughter, Joan, in 1939. He died in Portland on 12 August 1956 and she on 27 December 1989.

He was born on 9 June 1896 in Bingley, Yorkshire, England. In 1921 they were living at 808 7th Ave in Saskatoon. On 7 June 1923, they boarded SS ‘Princess Adelaide’ and sailed from Vancouver, British Columbia to Seattle, Washington to take up permanent residence in Portland, Oregon. In 1940, Horace, Helene and Patricia were still living in Portland. Nothing more was found about this family.

Florence Ada Hillyard, a sister of Alfred Morley Hillyard, was born in Tottenham, Middlesex, England in October 1875. She and her family were in Tottenham, London, England in 1881 and in Dorking, Surrey, England in 1891. She married Nelson Emery on 4 January 1899 in Dorking. He was born on 11 September 1875 in Middlesex, England to William Moran Emery and Mary Ann Rumsey. His siblings were Barbara ‘Mary Ann’ (b 1868), William Henry ‘Randall’ (b 1869), John (b 1871), Elizabeth Sarah (b 1872), Annie Matilda (b 1874), Charlotte Helena Jane (b 1877), Emily Diana (b 1879), Joseph Ashton (b 1881) and Christine Hose (Chrissie) (b 1882). A son, Nelson “Victor” Moran was born on 6 September 1898 in Dorking and the family was living there in 1901. Nelson’s uncle, William Henry Rumsey, age 48, born in Camberwell, Surrey, was living with them. Nelson was a house furnisher who worked from home and William was a furniture salesman. A daughter, Florence Kathleen “Lilian” May, was born to Nelson and Florence in May 1903 in Dorking. The Emery family boarded SS ‘Empress of Ireland’ in Liverpool, England about 14 February 1908 and arrived in Canada on 24 February 1908. They may have disembarked at Halifax, Nova Scotia or St John, New Brunswick. Their final destination was Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1911, they were living in Sutherland which is now part of Saskatoon. Another daughter, Phyllis Joyce, was born on 5 February 1915 in Saskatoon.

In 1916, the Emery family was living on 8th St in Saskatoon and Nelson’s Uncle William Rumsey who had emigrated in 1913, was living with them. The Saskatoon Henderson Directory for 1921 had the family & uncle listed at 230 2nd Ave N, but the census record could not be found. Victor enlisted for WWI on 2 April 1917 and was injured in France on 9 November 1918; two days before the Armistice. He died from his wounds on 12 November. He had served as a private with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry and was buried in Quievrain Communal Cemetery, 7¼ miles north east of Valenciennes, France. Victor’s name was likely put on the quilt by family members as we doubt the quilt was being made as early as April of 1917. In 1923, the Emery family emigrated to the USA and settled in Portland, Oregon. Nelson, Florence and Phyllis were found there in the 1930 and 1940 census records. Phyllis married Thomas Edward Dodson on 15 June 1940 in Portland, Oregon. Florence Ada Emery may have died in Portland, Oregon on 19 June 1942 as there is a death record for that name, but no age or other identifying information is available. Nelson Emery died on 31 March 1960 in San Francisco and some trees indicated that Lilian also died in San Francisco. Phyllis died in Seattle, Washington on 21 June 1987.

William Henry Rumsey, a brother of Nelson Emery’s mother, Mary Ann Rumsey (1845-1935), was born on 25 December 1851 in Camberwell, Surrey, England to Henry Rumsey and Sarah Insull. Other siblings were Sarah (1843-1927), Charlotte (b 1847), Elizabeth (b 1849), Emily (b 1855) and Thomas (b 1859). In 1871 he was living with his parents and siblings at Mile End Old Town, London, England. He married Mary Elizabeth Rowland on 25 March 1877 in St Pancras, St Mary Magdalene, England. In 1881, they were living in Marylebone, London, England and had three children, William James (b 1877), John S (b 1880) and Jane M (b 1881). By 1901, William was living in the home of his nephew, Nelson Emery and was once again living with that family in 1916 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In both census records he was listed as married, but none of his family was living with him.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Emery/Hillyard/Rumsey/Willdey Tree.
