Robert Mathew Buchanan was born on 26 April 1880 in Lanark, Ontario, Canada to William Buchanan (1841-1898) & Sarah Ann Marks (1858-1951). Robert had four brothers, John Wellington (1878-1881), William George (1881-1965), John A H (1886-1919) & Thomas Austin (1889-1952) and two sisters, Mary Jane (1885-1917) & Annie Mathilda (1892-1969). His family farmed in Sherbrooke, Lanark, Ontario.

Robert joined the Dominion & Western Agencies (later the Dominion Western Agency) and became managing director in Saskatoon in 1913 when he was 33 years old. Two years later he established his own real estate and finance business - RM Buchanan & Co.

Robert married Mary ? and they had a son George P, born about 1915/16. George was a salesman in his father’s business in 1935-40.

Robert died on 5 November 1944 in Saskatoon.
