A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

CHRISTOPHER EDWARD WEBB, MINNIE MABEL WEBB née WIGGINS and

MILTON EDWARD WEBB

Christopher Edward Webb was born on 19 December 1873 in Hastings, Ontario to Thomas S E Webb (1842-1917) and Elizabeth McKeown (1835-1917). His siblings were: Margaret (b 1863), Elizabeth (b 1866), Thomas Henry (1870-1961), John (b 1872), George (b 1877) and a baby boy (1880-1880). The Webb family lived in Rawdon, Hastings County, Ontario at the time of the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

He married Minnie Mabel Wiggins on 24 March 1897 in Spring Brook, Ontario. She was the daughter of George Downey Wiggins (1848-1895) and Frances Emma Jones (1854-1945). Her siblings were: Milton Jones (1882-1948), Ida Myrtle (1883-1964), George Morley (1886-1887) and Susanna Malinda (1889-1981). The Wiggins family also lived in Rawdon in 1881 and 1891. Milton Edward was born to Christopher and Minnie on 6 February 1898 in Springbrook.

In 1901, the family lived in Madoc, Ontario where Christopher was a cheesemaker. 1911 found the family in Brandon, Manitoba where Christopher was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) as a baggage man. By 1916 they had moved to 502 25th St E, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and to #3 Bell Apartments, 18th St W by 1921. Christopher continued to work for the railway and was baggage manager for at least part of this employment. The family was Methodist, but it was not until 1924, that Milton’s name appeared in the 3rd Ave Methodist Church roll, so it is unknown if that was the family church at the time the quilt was being made. Milton enlisted for WWI on 20 March 1918. He had become a doctor (practiced in Saskatoon for 23 years), was married to Lydia and had a son and two daughters by the time of his death in Saskatoon on 9 January 1946. Christopher died in Saskatoon on 28 April 1953 and Minnie, likely in the same city, on 30 April 1963. All were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
