THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Valentine Ernest E J Cherry was born on 19 April 1890 in Brant, Ontario to Richard Cherry (1853-1928 & Annie Meaney (b 1869). Ernest had two sisters, Alice M (b 1889) & Ellie Glendayler (b 1892). Richard was the store keeper of a general store in South Dumfries, Brant.

By 1911, aged 21 Ernest had moved to Regina where he lodged at 2215 Lorne and he was employed by an implement company, possibly Cockshut Plow, as a salesman or stenographer (the census record is unclear).

On 22 April 1916, in Winnipeg, Manitoba he married Lorena Pearl Baker. Lorena was born on 14 January 1890 in York, Ontario to Joseph Baker (b 1840) & Susan Jack (b 1850). Lorena had three brothers, Joseph Edward (b 1879), Silas W (b 1881) & Albert Milton (b 1883) and one sister, Alberta Maud (b 1883). Albert & Albertina were twins born on 23 December 1883.

Following his marriage, Ernest worked for Cockshut Plow for many years, either as a manager or a salesman/traveller. Ernest & Lorena had two children, Richard (b 1917) & Desmond Raymond (b 1918). The family lived at 720 Eastlake Ave initially, left Saskatoon briefly for RM Perdue and then returned to Saskatoon at 811 6th Ave N in 1924 before moving to 619 9th Ave N for a few years until 1932. After 1934, the family was at 826 5th Ave N. There is no mention of Ernest in Henderson’s city directory after 1937, so it is possible this is when he died, but no record has been found. Lorena continued to live here with her son Richard. Lorena died on 22 January 1968 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

No record has been found of Richard’s death. Desmond died on 30 October 1988 and is buried alongside his mother in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Cherry Tree.
