THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

William Carr was born on 10 June 1850 in Allendale, Northumberland, England to Nicholas Carr (1820-1904) & Jane Snaith (1812-1855). William was a labourer at the time of his marriage in July 1870 at Hexham, Northumberland to Jane Armstrong. Jane was born on 22 January 1844 in Allendale, Northumberland to John Armstrong (1809-1862) & Frances Hetherington (1814-1885).

William & Jane had five daughters:

Hannah (Elizabeth) Annie, born on 15 January 1871 in Allendale, Northumberland
Clara Jane, born on 12 September 1872 in Allendale, Northumberland
Fanny Louisa, born on 7 August 1875 in Allendale, Northumberland
Laura Edith, born on 31 August 1877 in Allendale, Northumberland and
Florence May, born on 16 September 1883 in Allendale, Northumberland.

The family emigrated to Canada on SS ‘Grecian’ sailing from Glasgow about 26 August 1888 and arriving in Quebec on 31 July 1888. William’s father, Nicholas, came with them. Their reported destination was Langanberg, now in Saskatchewan, about halfway between Winnipeg and Saskatoon.

The family were living in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba when their daughters married:

Hannah (Elizabeth) Annie married Frederick Harvey Davidson on 4 January 1899

Clara Jane married Edgar William Riddle on 10 November 1909
Fanny Louisa married Hugh Edward Hamilton on 17 August 1904
Laura Edith married John Nelson Semmens on 12 June 1907 and
Florence May married John (Jack) Graham (d 1917) in 1908 and then Charles Edward Blakley Rae on 8 June 1921.

Frederick & Elizabeth had one daughter Verna May (b 1904). The family lived at 460 McDermot St, Winnipeg for many years. Frederick was a building contractor and Verna was a school teacher.

Edgar William Riddle was born on 28 June 1880 in North Easthope Township, Perth County, Ontario to James Riddle (1844-1890) & Mary Ann Doherty (b 1848).

Mary Ann Riddle (nee Doherty) is a possible candidate for the signer ‘Anna Riddle’. There is one other possible candidate for this signature. See Annie Gordon Riddell.

After their marriage Edgar & Clara came to Saskatoon. Initially Edgar ran a hardware store but then became a travelling salesman, generally for Prairie City Oil Co. They lived at various addresses in 25th St before moving to #21 The Parkview 445 5th Ave N. Edgar was a member of the UCT Quartet - see R A Bridgman. Edgar died of a tumour in hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, USA on 31 August 1931. He was buried in the family plot in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.

Hugh Edward Hamilton was born on 20 October 1871 in East Clifton, Quebec to Matthew Hamilton (1843-1932) & Irene Isobell Pierce (1842-1935). He & Fanny had two sons, Lyle Armstrong (1910-1971) & Ronald Edward (1915-1993). The family moved to Battleford and then Unity. Hugh was a dealer/agent for farm implements.

John Nelson Semmens was born on 7 October 1879 in York, Ontario to John Semmens (1850-1921) & Helen Calista Behimer (1855-1901). John Semmens Sr was a Methodist minister and later an Indian agent - see Dictionary of Canadian Biography. John Nelson Semmens was an architect responsible for many public buildings in Winnipeg - see Memorable Manitobans. John & Laura remained in Winnipeg most of their lives, only retiring to British Columbia shortly before they died.

We have very little information about Jack Graham. It is likely that he married Florence in 1907 or 1908 as she is in the 1906 census as a single woman. Their twins Beryl Jean & William Edgar (Bill) were born on 31 May 1909 in Portage La Prairie. Florence and the twins were with her parents in Portage La Prairie for the 1911 census but Jack is not with them. Jack reportedly was killed in action in France in 1917. Florence subsequently married Charles Edward Blakley Rea/Rae (b 1881) on 8 June 1921 in Portage La Prairie.

Bill Graham died on active service during WWII in either 1942 or 1944. Beryl Graham married Henry W Martens. She died in Portage La Prairie in 1979.
