ROBERT ADAMS BRIDGMAN

Robert Adams Bridgman was born on 31 December 1881 in Marldon, Devon, England to Robert Adams Bridgman Sr & Harriet Jane Pethybridge. Robert had two sisters, Ethel Mary (1878-1879) & Amy Louise (b 1886) and two brothers, William Herbert (1879-1964) & Frederck John (b 1883).

Robert came to Canada about 1905, reaching Saskatoon by 1910 when he lived at 414 22nd St E and worked as a shipping clerk for International Harvester Co. He was living at 337 21st St in 1911 when he married Gertrude Louise McDougall on 11 September. Gertie was born on 11 January 1880 in Eramosa, Wellington, Ontario to Charles McDougall & Ann Jeanette Irving.

Robert & Gertie had three children, Mary Catherine (b 1912), Robert Adam Jr (1914-1937) & Ruth Margaret (1920-1966). Robert continued his career with International Harvester, progressing to assistant manager by 1919. In 1921, the family was living at 2748 Angus St, Regina and Robert is a contractor. In 1929/30 Robert made a trip back to the UK possibly to visit his parents in Compton, Paignton, Devon. On his return he was living at 504 4th Ave E, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. In 1950 when Gertie died they were living at 2399 West 36th Ave, Vancouver, British Columbia. Robert died on 9 August 1955 in North Vancouver.

Four men whose names are on the quilt were members of the UCT Quartet. EFL McGarvey was a music tutor and this may have been a ‘barber-shop’ quartet. UCT is the United Commercial Travelers of America.
