THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

EDWARD FRANKLIN and DOROTHY ISABEL McGARVEY

Edward Franklin Lavender McGarvey was born on 26 August 1882 in Alliston, Simcoe, Ontario to Edward Chambers McGarvey (1850-1884) and Mary Ann (Annie) Lavender (1855-1929). His siblings were William James (b 1876), Josephine Isadore Bella (b 1878) and Anna Alberta (Isabella) (b 1880).

Edward married Florence Elizabeth (Flora) Westlake on 11 August 1908 in Toronto, Ontario. She was born on 24 September 1877 in Pickering, Ontario to Richard Westlake (b 1852) and Isabel Laing Allison (1854-1925). Her siblings were: William Edward (b 1873), Margaret Cameron (Maggie) (1879-1972), Alfred John (b 1881) and Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie) (1884-1921).

Edward and Flora had five children: Dorothy Isabel (b 20 September 1909), Florence Eleanor (1911-1911), Allison (Allen) (b 1914), Jean (b 1916) and Bell (b 1918). The first two children were born in Toronto and the last three in Saskatchewan. In 1911 the McGarvey family was living in Toronto where Edward was employed by the post office.

In 1916 they were living at 410 8th St in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where Edward gave his occupation as a musician in the 1916 census. They were living at the same location in 1918, but by this time Edward was employed as a blockman for John Deere Plow Company. They lived at 516 12th St in 1919 and at 1008 Melrose from 1920 to 1921. During most of this time, Edward was employed as a traveler for John Deere Plow, but was listed as a vocal teacher in the 1921 Saskatoon Henderson Directory. From at least 1935 to 1945 Edward and Flora lived in Edmonton, Alberta. Dorothy married Wilbur Gallinger and they had at least one son.

Edward signed the quilt twice. He was one of the four men whose names are on the quilt as members of the UCT Quartet. Since Edward is the only one of the four who was a vocal teacher, we may assume he was their arranger. See Robert Adams Bridgman.
