Catherine Darge (Kate) Chisholm was born on 21 May 1899 in Coldingham, Berwickshire, Scotland to Alexander Chisholm (1858-1934) & Mary Roberts Robertson (1870-1943). Kate had three sisters, Jeanie (b 1893), Annie D (b 1894) & Mary R (b 1896) and two brothers, William Alexander (1894-1973) & George C (b 1900).
Alexander & Mary with Mary R, Kate & George left Glasgow about 1 June 1914 aboard SS ‘Scandinavian’ bound for Quebec where they arrived on 7 June. They were headed for Saskatoon. By 1916 they were established at 715 Ave E North. Alexander was working as a house painter, Mary was a nurse, Mary R was treasurer for St John Ambulance Division No 7, Annie D & Kate were working for the Government Telephones, George was a clerk for Caswell Hill Pharmacy and William had enlisted.
By 1919, the family had moved round the corner to 828 Ave D North and Alexander was still working as a house painter, Mary was a nurse, Kate was a ledger keeper for Government Telephones, Annie was a telephone operator, William was still on active service and Mary R was a nurse at the Municipal Hospital.
William married Bertha Rae Epp (1897-1983) about 1922 and they had one son Alexander (b 1923).
Kate married Montgomery Arthur Newman on 6 August 1923 in Victoria, British Columbia. Montgomery was born on 29 October 1892 in Melbourne, Australia to Arthur Ginbey Newman (1863-1893) & Julia Margaret McConechy (b 1872). Montgomery was a technician in a radio store. They moved to the US and settled in Montesano, Washington. They had an adopted daughter, Patricia A (b 1928) of German parentage. They lived in Washington until the 1940’s when they moved to California. Montgomery died on 24 April 1980 in Burnaby, British Columbia. No record has been found for Kate’s death although Montgomery was a widower when he died.
