Richard Tossell Chown was born on 22 March 1880 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario to Robert Joseph Chown (1835-1914) & Mary Louisa Tossell (1842-1904). Richard has one sister, Harriet (Hattie) Louisa (1866-1955) and one brother, Theophilous Robert (1871-1878).
Richard grew up in Kingston, Ontario before moving to Saskatoon in 1909 where he took over the established drug & stationery of J Fred Johnson at 171 2nd Ave. In the following years the business was known as Red Cross Drug Store and then appears to have combined with A Dulmage, druggists across the street at 268 2nd Ave.
About 1913 he married Ethelyn Agnes Jickling. Ethel was born on 11 April 1882 in Blanshard Township, Perth, Ontario to John Lemmon Jickling (1844-1907) & Rhoda McKim (1847-1927). Ethel had four brothers, William McKim (1873-1937), John Leigh (1875-1941), Stanley (1888-1968) & Wilbur Leon (1890-1891) and five sisters, Marion Isabel (1874-1938), Amanda Jane (1879-1944), Anna Maud (b 1880), Carrie Kathleen (1884-1943) & Edna (1886-1960).
Richard and Ethel lived at 730 Spadina Crescent in 1915. Richard was listed in the Henderson City Directory as manager, A Dulmage, druggists. By 1916 Richard had partnered with John A MacMillan to form Chown-Macmillan, druggists where he subsequently became president. From 1919, Richard & Ethel lived at 203 Poplar Crescent and Richard continued with his druggist business. In 1923 they moved to California and lived at 319A Hermosa Ave, Long Beach. Around this time Richard and Ethel separated. Richard subsequently married a widow Emma Deanes Wilkins (née Hayes) on 28 August 1925 in Long Beach. Richard established a stock & bonds investment business with J P Kearney. Richard died on 17 June 1954 in Los Angeles.
Ethel remained in California, moving to 2601 Haste Boulevard, Oakland. She return to Canada about 1946 and died in Victoria, British Columbia on 12 September 1949.
