Sidney Benjamin Dale was born on 26 November 1882 in Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire, England to John Chester Dale (1842-1886) & Mary Chester Booth (1844-1910). Sidney had two brothers, Earnest Charles (b 1870) & Frank Chester (1879-1923) and four sisters, Mary Louisa (b 1871), Jessie Constance (1875-1918), Agnes Victoria (1876-1928) & Lillian Beatrice (1883-1934).
Sidney travelled to Canada from Liverpool on SS ‘Ionian’ arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 13 March 1905 possibly with a friend, Sidney Batty also from Staffordshire. They had both been fruiterers in England and both hoped to become farmers in Calgary, Alberta. However in 1906 Sidney was in Saskatoon and by 1909 he was in business as a fruit retailer in partnership with Albert Hughes. It is likely that Albert is Sidney’s brother-in-law as his sister,Jessie Constance, married an Albert Hughes around this time in Saskatoon. Albert also ran a cafe - Albert’s Restaurant Cafe. Sidney became the owner in 1911 and married Jessie Eleanor Blower (1894-1925) around this time. Sidney and Jessie had three daughters, Doris May (1913-2011), Edna Isabel (1916-2000) & Dorothy Lavina (1920-1990) and one son, Sydney Benjamin (1914-1957).
