MARY ANDERSON

Mary Bruce Nelson was born in June 1868 in Decorah County, Minnesota to Hans D Nilson (1831-1911) and Jakobea (1840-1906). Her siblings were: Nels Johan (1871-1910), Jens S (1874-1909), Ane K (1877-1901), Jacob D (1879-1946) and Hans H (1881-1900). At some point, some members of this family changed their surname to Nelson as tombstones for various members of the family have different spellings. All of Mary's siblings were born in North Dakota and the Nelson family was enumerated in Richland, Dakota Territory in 1980.

Mary married John Erick Anderson on 16 April 1884. He was born in December 1852 in Westmanland, Sweden to undetermined parents. The Anderson family lived in Wolverton, Wilkin, Minnesota until at least 1901. Mary and John had five sons, Ephraim Martin (1885-1927), Joseph Haddock (1887-1953), Edwin Hjalmar (1890-1931), Arnold Herbert (1893-1974) and Roy Carl (b 1896) and one daughter, Edith C (b 1891).

The family came to Canada in 1903 and homesteaded near Wadena, Saskatchewan on 20-35-12- W2 in the RM of Sasman. Several of the boys obtained homestead grants for land near that of their father. By 1913 the Anderson's were living at 810 7th Ave, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They lived at 1219 Coy Ave (1914), 106 7th Ave (1915), and 326 11th St E (1916-1929). In 1918, John was an engineer working at the Military Hospital and two sons, Joseph & Arnold were on active service. John died on 26 June 1930 and Mary on 15 May 1936. They were buried in unmarked graves in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Anderson 1 Tree.

The house at 326 11th St was built and originally occupied by the Marr family and is the oldest house in Saskatoon still standing on its original site. The Marr Residence was officially designated heritage property by the City of Saskatoon on 11 January 1982.
