CAROLINE ELIZABETH (CARRIE) VANDERVOOT née TOTTON
Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Totton was born on 8 November 1855 in Rawdon Township, Hastings County, Ontario to William Totton (b 1809) and Cynthia (possibly Cotter) (b 1817). It is possible that her father was married twice, first to Agnes Johnson and second to Cynthia. There are baptismal records for several of her older siblings and they all name Agnes as the mother. All death records found for these siblings also name Agnes or Agnes Johnson as the mother. There was a marriage for William Totton and Cynthia Cotter in Hastings, Ontario that occurred on 19 March 1852 which could be for Carrie's father. This would mean that Carrie and her youngest brother, Isaiah, were the only children born to Cynthia. The marriage record of Carrie, her brother, John, and her sister, Florentine, all name the mother as Cynthia, so this supported that Agnes and Cynthia are the same person. If Agnes died and William Totton, married Cynthia, based on the ages of children, the marriage to Cynthia occurred within two years of Agnes' death. If it was a spouse who gave the names of parents on the marriage registrations, it is possible that they didn't know, at that time, that Cynthia was not the mother of their spouse. Alternately, Cynthia and Agnes could be the same person. However, it is odd that the name Agnes never appeared in any of the census records found for this family from 1861 to 1891 and yet it was used on every baptismal record that could be found for children born up to 1849. Carrie's siblings were John Wesley (1836-1901), James (b 1841), Florentine Florilla (1844-1929), Agnes (b 1847), William (b 1847), Martha (b 1848), Mary (b 1849), Robert (b 1851) and Isaiah (1853-1934).
Carrie lived with her parents and siblings in Rawdon until she was married to George Anthony Louis "Wilmot" Vandervoort in Rawdon on 1 January 1873. Wilmot was born on 12 April 1853 in Rawdon to James A Vandervoort (1822-1899) and Amanda Crouter (1828-1890). His siblings were: Albert Oscar (1849-1865), Mary Amelia (1856-1916), Helen (1857-1865) and Charles Aikins (b 1867). After their marriage, Carrie and Wilmot continued to live in Rawdon until at least 1891. Children born in Ontario were: William Totton (1874-1875), James Cecil "Harper" (1880-1896), Ceila Amelia (1883-1889), Helena Maude (1887-1958) and Carl (1890-1971). A daughter, Mollie Hazel (1899-1985) was born in Whitehead, Manitoba and in 1901 the family was enumerated there.
They were living in Brandon, Manitoba in 1906 and by 1911 had moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Mr and Mrs G A Vandervoort first appeared on the roll of 3rd Ave Methodist Church in Saskatoon in 1912. Mr and Mrs W A, Mollie and W Vandervoort first appeared on the roll in 1914. Mollie and W were removed in 1922 and others were removed in 1988 when the roll was cleared of past members not previously removed. Wilmot Sr died in Saskatoon on 16 July 1914 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. Carrie lived at 409 4th Ave N and at #205 Drinkle Building No 3, 115 3rd Ave S in 1916 and 1921 respectively. In 1930, she was found living in Olympia, Washington with her daughter, Helen, and grandson, Charles Sutherland. She died on 12 January 1946 in Vancouver, British Columbia and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery next to Wilmot.
