THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Abigail Julia (Abbie) Fowler was born on 11 July 1848 in Norton, Kings, New Brunswick to John Fowler (b 1822) & Sarah (b 1920). Abbie grew up on the family farm in Springfield, Kings County and married William Pen T Stone (1846-1872) about 1868. They had one daughter Della (1870-1956). Abbie subsequently married John Irwin McLeod (1847-1943) on 29 June 1875 in Penobsquis, Kings County. John was born on 15 June 1847 in Penobsquis to Hector McLeod (1807-1873) & Sarah Ross (-1847). John and Abbie had a further daughter, Abigail Irva (Abbie) (1884-1909) and five sons, Frederick Ernest W (1876-1881), Irvin (1879-1900), Herbert Wesley (1880-1962), Frederick Ernest (1883-1969) & Ira Elwell (1889-1966).

John and Abbie moved to Penobscot, Maine, USA around 1890 but returned to Canada and lived in Saskatoon between 1917-1924 at 923 6th Avenue, sometimes with their son Ira Elwell. Both father and son were telephone/telegraph engineers. Ira married Josie Belle Heal on 22 July 1911 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Josie was born on 8 January 1890 in La Grange, Penobscot, Maine to Lewis Garner Heal (b 1864) & Cora Elmire Bishop (b 1865). Josie had one brother, Carl Lewis (1887-1973).

Ira & Josie had two daughters, Hazel (1914-2014) & Mildred Leona (1918-2011) and three sons, Carl Lewis (1920-1991), Donald (Don) Hector (1923-2004) and George who is still living. Ira & Josie lived at 923 6th Ave, Saskatoon during the period when the quilt was being made. Ira was the chief operator for CPR telephones. Hazel married Arthur Andrew Jourdin (1914-1991) on 2 February 1940 at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Victoria, British Columbia. They had on son, Thomas Arthur (1945-2004). Hazel died in Saskatoon on 26 Apr 2014.

Ira & Josie’s daughter, Mildred married George Kerr Derrick (1914-1981) on 1 October 1943. George was born on 16 October 1914 in Saskatoon to Oliver Petrie Derrick (1886-1975) & Mary Robertson Kerr (1894-1956). George had three sisters, Olive May (b 1919), Margaret Watson (b 1920) & Dorothy (b 1922).

Neither Hazel McLeod nor George Kerr would have been old enough to sign the quilt themselves, but presumably their parents added their names to the quilt. It is merely coincidence that they subsequently married each other.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Derrick/McLeod Tree.
