THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Charles William Cumbers was born on 29 June 1889 to Thomas William Cumbers (1848-1940) & Margaret Ross (1850-1929). Charles had three brothers, John Alexander (1877-1953), Thomas (b 1884, died in infancy) & George Stanley (1891-1979). Thomas was an iron machinist and continued working at least until he was 73 years of age.

Charles married Edna Emaline McBratney on 14 August 1915 in Athens, Leeds, Ontario. He gave his address as Saskatoon and occupation as Telegraph Operator. Edna was living in Athens and her occupation was bookkeeper. Edna had two sisters, Wealthy Alecia (b 1883) & Bertha (b 1886).

The couple returned to the Saskatoon area and their son Grant Ross was born in Saskatoon on 8 December 1919. The only address in Saskatoon that we have found is 1309 Ave C North from the Henderson directory of 1920. At the 1921 census the family are living at the CPR station in Kindersley with Charles still working as a telegraph operator for the CPR. By 1935 they have moved to Eyebrow, Moose Jaw which seems have remained their home until Edna’s death in 1953. Charles was living at 533 Athabasca St W in Moose jaw in 1957 and died in 1966.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Cumbers Tree.
