George Arthur Cruise was born on 3 June 1882 in North Walsingham Township, Norfolk County, Ontario to William John Cruise (1851-1934) & Elizabeth Johanna (Lizzie) Collings (1852-1934). George had four sisters, Victoria (Tory) J (b 1875), Joicie Gertrude (b 1878), Elizabet Alice (1880-1966) & Margaret Winoni Ethel (1887-1981) and one brother, William Wilson (1885-1957).
In 1910, George established himself in Saskatoon opening his barrister’s office at 105 Bowerman Block, 202 21st Street. He lived on 3rd Avenue, possibly at 434 as that was his address the following year.
In April 1912, Marion Bruce Pettit graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon with an honours degree in English & History. Marion was one of the seven who were the first graduates of the University. Marion was born on 1 March 1891 to Herman Pettit (1855-1922) & Beatrice Elizabeth Bruce (1867-1942). Marion had three sisters, Ora Robertson (b 1893), Doris Evelyn (b 1895) & Isobel Kathlene (b 1901) and one brother, Walter Melvin (1899-1962).
George & Marion married in 1912 and had six children, Margaret Kathleen (b 1913), Harold (1914-1983), Eleanor (1916-1974), George Arthur Jr (1918-1956), Mary Margery (1921-1974) & Robert Alexander (1923-2008). In 1913, George joined with Clifford Tufts to form Cruise & Tufts, Barristers & Solicitors at 202-204 Drinkle Building, 21st Street and employed five staff. In 1915, George & Clifford were joined by Walter Lindal and the name changed to Cruise, Tufts & Lindal. In 1920, the law firm was renamed Cruise, Robinson & Doraty at the same address in Drinkle Building. The Doraty mentioned here is Harvey Argue (Harry) Doraty who also signed the quilt.
George was one of the trustees of the Collegiate Institute, Victoria Ave/11th St, Saskatoon from 1913-1922. In 1921 & 1925, George stood as a candidate in the elections for city councillors but was not successful on either occasion.
George continued to practise as a barrister until his death on 1 January 1941. Marion died on 14 November 1955. They are buried in adjacent plots in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Cruise Tree.
