JANE SOPHIA SYMINGTON née CAPES

Jane Sophia Capes was born on 11 May 1857 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA to Reuben Dennis Capes (1835-1868) and Henrietta C Heel (b 1835). In 1860 she was living with her parents in New Brunswick. 1871 found her living with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth H and Thomas Scrivener in Potterspury, Northamptonshire, England. A nephew and niece, Henry (7) & Ellen Dunkly (6), were also living with them. In the 2nd quarter of 1881, Jane married John Charles Symington in Potterspury. John was born on 10 November 1856 in Hockcliffe, Bedfordshire, England to James William Symington (1821-1889) and Mary Price (b 1826). His siblings were: Andrew (1848-1918), Sarah Ann (b 1850), Johnson (1851-1924) and William Lennox (1855-1891). John and Jane had five children: Winifred Annie (1882-1945), Charles Dennis (b 1883), Marion Henrietta (b 1888), Reginald (b 1899) and John A (b 1908). In 1891 they were living in Prittlewell, Essex, England and Jane's mother, Henrietta, was living with them. In 1901, Jane was still listed as married, but she and Reginald were listed as visitors in the home of Reginald and Elizabeth Price in Lewisham, London, England. During the same census year, John, Winifred, Charles and Marion were living in Battersea, London, England.

Charles immigrated to Canada on 8 May 1908 on SS ‘Empress of Britain’. He gave his final destination as Regina, Saskatchewan. At some point he filed for a homestead on NW-7-34-24-W2, which is near Viscount, Saskatchewan. According to the 1911 census records, his sisters Marion and Winifred immigrated in 1908 and his parents and other siblings came in 1909. His father, John, died in Viscount on 24 May 1911. The 1911 census found Jane, Charles, Reginald and John living in 34-24- W2; likely on Charles' homestead. Winifred and Marion were living in Regina. Although the family could not be found in the 1916 census, the WWI enlistment record for Reginald, dated 1 June 1917, gave his mother's name as next of kin and her address as 313 29th St, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1917, 1918 & 1919, Jane S Symington, widow of John C was listed in the Saskatoon Henderson City Directory at 313 29th St W, 522 3rd Ave N and 109 8th St W, respectively. She was always listed at the same address as two or three of her children. The Symingtons were not listed in the 1920 Henderson Directory. By the time of the 1921 census, Jane was living in Regina with her daughter, Marion.
