BEATON HALL SQUIRES

Beaton Hall Squires was born on 16 December 1881 in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland to John Squires and Amelia Davis Hipsley of Hippisley. He had at least one brother, James A (b 1879). Beaton obtained A. B. and LL.B. degrees in law from Harvard University and was admitted to the bar in Boston, Massachusetts in 1908. In his early university years he coached football and played tackle on the Harvard football team earning the honorary position of all American Tackle in 1904-1905. He was captain of the Harvard varsity team in his senior year.

Beaton married Edith Louise Gaffield on1 February 1913, likely in Massachusetts. She was born on 9 May 1873 in Brookline, Massachusetts to Frank W Gaffield (b 1850) and Sarah Louise Whitcomb (b 1850). She had a sister, Mabel F (b 1875). Beaton moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1913 and was a member of the firm of Maclean, Hollin-rake, Moxon and Squires, Barristers for three years. He then went into private law practice for a few years. In 1923, he formed a partnership with Andrew S Sibbald and their law firm was called Squires and Sibbald. From 1916 to 1921, Beaton and Edith lived at 821 8th Ave N.

By 1930 they had moved to Winchester, Middlesex, Massachusetts and were still there in 1940 living at 27 Lakeview Road. Oddly, no children were recorded in any census records until 1940. In that census Beaton and Edith were listed as having four children: Jane M (b 1919), Douglas (b 1923), Irene (b 1927) and Nancy (b 1928). As Louise was already 46 years old in 1919 when the oldest child was born, these children must have been adopted or taken in from another family. Two online biographies were found for Beaton Hall Squires: Biographies of Newfoundlanders and Wikipedia.
