ASHLEY TOMLINSON ENGLISH and LOTTIE MAY ENGLISH née MANUEL and

EARLA ISABELLA MILLER

Ashley Tomlinson English was born on 9 July 1878 in Lapeer, Michigan, USA to John English (b 1849) & Margaret (Maggie) McCullen (1856-1892). Ashley had two brothers, William Augustus (b 1874) & Guy Liburn (b 1876) and one sister Merilla Abigail (1887-1971). By the time Ashley was two years old, the family had moved to Pleasant Valley, Pawnee, Kansas where his father was farming.

In 1891, Ashley came to Canada with his family. His mother died the following year when Ashley was only fourteen. By 1901, Ashley was employed as a railroad agent living in Brandon, Manitoba. In 1906, he had moved to Winnipeg and the following year he married Lottie May Miller née Manuel on 8 May 1907.

Lottie was born on 28 June 1872 in Napanee, Ontario to Thomas Henry Manuel (1852-1903) & Isabella Elizabeth Saddler (1846-1887). Lottie had married Peter Anderson Miller (b 1895) on 15 July 1891 in Mitchell, Ontario. Peter & Lottie had two girls, the first born in 1895 probably died in infancy and the second, Earla Isabella Miller was born on 17 March 1896 in Wingham, Huron, Ontario. Peter died of ‘consumption of the lungs’ just two months later on 13 May 1896. He was only twenty-seven years old. Lottie was a housekeeper for Ashley in Winnipeg in 1906 and they married the following year.

Ashley and Lottie adopted their niece Mildred (1907-1996), daughter of Ashley’s brother William after the death of Mildred’s mother in 1908.

Ashley worked as an engineer for Canadian Pacific Railway for thirty-four years from 1909 when he came to Saskatoon until he retired in 1943. Ashley and Lottie retired to British Columbia and lived at 3504 Imperial St, Burnaby. Lottie died on 2 January 1958 and Ashley died just a month later on 5 February.

Earla Miller taught in Saskatoon throughout her life from 1923-1951, mainly at Albert School. She died on 7 December 1992, aged 96 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
