EDITH ELIZABETH SELWOOD
Edith Elizabeth (Sally) Selwood was born on 1 July 1915 in Calgary, Alberta to Frederick Shelton Selwood (1873-1935) and Daisy Florence Augusta Nicklin (1884-1974). She had at least one brother, Charles E (1912-1950). The Selwood family was living in Calgary in 1916 and it appears that they may have remained there as both of Edith's parents died and were buried in Calgary.
Edith married Reginald Edward Gardener on 28 April 1943 in Jasper, Alberta. Reginald was born on 14 March 1914 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Walter Frederick Gardener (1881-1960) and Florence Ethel Staff (1882-1953). The Gardeners had three children, two girls and a boy. Reginald died in Edson, Alberta on 11 January 1997 and Edith, in the same place, on 31 August 2009.
At first it seemed unlikely that the Edith outlined above was the correct candidate for the signature on the quilt as she was only 3 years old in 1918. However, it was discovered that her mother's sister, Edith Minerva Nicklin who was born on 31 August 1885 in Ontario, married Thomas Kerr McCallum (b 1880) and that they lived in Saskatoon from at least 1911 to 1921.
It is speculated that the Selwoods came to Saskatoon for a visit during the time that the quilt was being made and that one of her adult relatives wrote her name on it. The name Edith Selwood is very rare and no other candidates with a connection to Saskatoon could be found.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Selwood Tree.
