ROY MERIDITH SCRATCH
Roy Meridith Scratch was born on 11 November 1886 in Mersea, Essex, Ontario to Charles Elihu Scratch (1872-1951) and Margaret Mary Snider (1876-1945). His siblings were: Roland Earl (b 1888), Milford Clane (1898-1962) and Thelma Irene (b 1903). The Scratch family was living in Mersea, Essex, Ontario in 1891 and in Leamington, Ontario in 1901.
Roy married Ethel M Hooktwith or Hookwith (seems they dropped the t in later records) on 7 November 1908 in Windsor, Ontario. She was born on 26 July 1885 in Ontario to Peter Hookwith (1847-1925) and Matilda A Robson (1844-1925). Her siblings were: Ella May (1875-1956), Annie Maud (1877-1955), Charlotte Belle (Lottie) (1877-1955) and Louise (1883-1940). By 1911 Ethel and Roy had moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Roy & Ethel lived at 310 Ave I in 1916, 301 245 3rd Ave South in 1918 and 224 2nd Ave N in 1921. Roy was a sign painter. By the time of the 1921 census Roy and Ethel had no children. Roy worked as a sign painter throughout his life. In the 1940s his business ‘Scratch Signs - Anything’ employed at least four sign painters. They resided at 311 22nd St E until 1947 when they retired to California.
Ethel died on 17 March 1962 and Roy on 28 April 1971 in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California. Ethel was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.
Although the middle initial on the quilt appears to be a W, it is believed that the signature belonged to Roy Meridith Scratch. There was no other candidate that could be found for the signature. It may be that someone wrote the name down on a paper with the intention of adding it to the quilt later and perhaps they mistook the M for a W.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Scratch Tree.
