GEORGE FREDERICK SCHWALM and MARGUERITE LAURA SCHWALM née PLETSCH
George Frederick Schwalm was born on 22 May 1882 in Mildmay, Bruce, Ontario to George Schwalm (1849-1918) and Annie (Anna) Kratt (1854-1925). His siblings were: Mary Mathilda (1878-1955), Edward A (1880-1951), Anna Emilia (1885-1973), William John (1887-1963) and Clara (1894-1987). In 1891 the Schwalm family was living in Carrick, Bruce, Ontario and in 1901 they were living in Egremont, Grey, Ontario.
George married Marguerite Laura Pletsch on 22 June 1910 in Mildmay. He gave Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as his residence and she, Mildmay. Marguerite was born on 19 August 1884 in Bruce County, Ontario to Ludwig (Lewis/Louis) Pletsch (1848-1936) and Elizabeth Herman (1855-1952). Her siblings were: Cathrena Rebecca (1877-1968), Clara Elizabeth (1879-1948), Melinda Anna (1887-1948), Elisabeth Adeline Iorine (Irene) (1891-1979) and Charles Henry (1893-1950).
Marguerite was raised in Carrick. After their marriage, George and Marguerite lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They had three children: Alice E (b 1911), George Kratt (1912-1996) and Marguerite Rojeanne (Rogena) (1918-2001). In 1911, the Schwalm family was living at 516 5th Ave N and in 1916-1918 at 830 6th Ave N. From 1918 through to 1950 when he retired, George was manager of Western Lighting Agencies Ltd. In the 1930s this company had a showroom in the ground-floor of London Building, 256-3rd Ave S. See here. (Courtesy of the Local History Room, Saskatoon Library).
Both Marguerite and George became members of 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1914 and George was a member of the Saskatoon Red Cross. Marguerite had a tragic accident on 13 January 1921 when she tried to move a gas heater that had caught fire and it exploded. The children were slightly injured, but were all right. Marguerite was taken to hospital, but died later from her injuries. She was taken back to Mildmay for burial. The 1921 census found George, a widower, and the children at 508 10th St. Marguerite's sister, Melinda, who was a nurse, was staying with them. George married Melinda on 12 January 1924 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Melinda's obituary listed 2 sons and 2 daughters, so she must have had a son after their marriage. Melinda died in Saskatoon on 20 August 1948. George later married Mable Winifred (unknown maiden name) who died on 20 February 1987. George died on 14 July 1973. George, Melinda and Mable were all buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
