THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

KATHLEEN LOUISE RIPPENGALE née BOYTE

Kathleen Louise Boyte was born on 15 April 1895 in Reigate, Surrey, England to John Edward Boyte (1866-1946) and Ellen Louise (Nellie) Snelgar (1868-1945). Her siblings were: Hilda Dorothy (1891-1894), Winifred Ellen (b 1894), Sydney James (1897-1968), Doris Snelgar (b 1899) and Sylvia Mary (b 1909). In 1901 the Boyte family was living in Reigate.

On 11 May 1912, the family boarded SS ‘Montrose' in Liverpool bound for Quebec, Canada. In 1916, most of the Boyte family was living at 202 8th St W, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. By then, Kathleen had married William Rippengale and was living at 420 Ave J North, Saskatoon. William was born on 16 December 1886 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, England to Edward Rippengale (1859-1947) and Fanny Knight (b 1862). His siblings were: Harry (1885-1969), Elizabeth Emma (1890-1946), George (b 1895), Jeane (b 1896), Ada (b 1898) and Fanny Louisa (b 1903). Until at least 1901, the Rippengale family lived in Burton on Trent.

William immigrated to Montreal, Quebec in May 1905 aboard SS ‘Tunisian' which sailed from Liverpool, England. He was headed for Brandon, Manitoba. The rest of the Rippengale family immigrated on the same ship in 1907. By 1911, William, his parents and siblings were living in the same household in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. From at least 1918 to 1921, William and Kathleen lived at 204 10th St, Saskatoon. They had at least two children: George (b 1917) and John (b 1918). Over the years, William worked at the post office as an accountant, clerk and inspector. Kathleen and William died in Victoria, British Columbia, Kathleen on 25 April 1971 and William, on 27 April 1975.

Although the signature on the quilt was very clearly K Rippengil or Rippingil, the only candidate that could be found for the signature was Kathleen Rippengale. A search on Ancestry for a name with the exact spelling of Rippengil or Rippingil yielded no results anywhere in Canada, so it seems unlikely that this surname was spelled correctly on the quilt. Perhaps Kathleen asked someone else to put her name on the quilt and they spelled it wrong. It is also possible that the correct signer has not been identified.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Rippengale Tree.
