THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Mary Constance Plewman was born on 29 July 1877 in Kilcoo House, Athy, Kildare County, Ireland to Edward George Plewman (1852-1903) and Martha Booth (1849-1898). She married John Beatty Rea on 25 October 1905 in Athy Methodist Church, Kildare County, Ireland. John was born on 21 October 1873 in Brookeborough, Fermanagh County, Ireland to Thompson Rea and Mary Anne McMahon. He had previously been married to Frances Alice (Fanny) Kearon (1874-1903) and had two children with her: Ethel "Patricia" (1901-1987) and Edward Thompson (Ted) (1903-1981). Mary and John had one son, John Plewman (1908-1945). John died on 20 January 1909 in Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland.

Mary and four and a half year old John boarded SS ‘Teutonic' in Liverpool, England on 20 April 1913 and landed in Quebec City, Quebec on 26 April 1913. Their final destination was given as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Mary was a nurse in Ireland and planned to pursue the same profession in Canada. In 1916 she was living at 610 6th Ave North and was working as a nurse in the hospital. She had two others living with her, a housekeeper, Eva Young and a boarder, Mary Wittiker(?). Mary Rea was listed as Methodist and she first appeared on the Roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1914. In 1921 Mary and her son were living in Regina, Saskatchewan. Mary died on 1 January 1948, likely in Toronto, Ontario.

It was interesting to note that an E Young, likely the Eva housekeeping for Mary in 1916, also signed the quilt. Although the name Molly was not used in any of the documentation found for Mary, we could find no other Rea associated with Saskatoon for the Molly Rea signature. As Molly is a common nick name for Mary, we thought that she was very likely the quilt signer.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Rea Tree.
