JOHN RAYMER and EMMA RAYMER née ARMITAGE

DAISY, ELLA & GRACE RAYMER and ALBERT MITCHELL GREENSIDES

John Raymer was born on 6 July 1862 in Markham, Ontario to Jacob Raymer (1828-1886) and Susannah Barkey (1832-1901). His siblings were: Henry (b 1855), Jesse (1857-1923), David (1862-1914), Eli (1865-1955) and Selina (1870-1934). The Raymer family lived in Markham in 1871 and Stouffville, York, Ontario in 1881. John married Emma Armitage on 5 December 1888 in Oakwood, Victoria, Ontario. Emma was born on 5 December 1865 in Mariposa, Victoria, Ontario to Jesse Armitage (1818-1865) and Jane Thompson (1830-1907). Her siblings were: George (b 1850), Mary (1851-1946), Hannah (1854-1889), Sarah (1856-1930), Amos (1859-1945), John (b1859), Charlotte (b 1862) and Melissa (1864-1895). She also had three siblings from her father's first marriage to Mary Thompson (1823-1845): Elizabeth (1842-1896), Seth (1844-1924) and Levi (b 1845). Emma was raised in Mariposa.

In 1891 John and Emma lived in Markham and in 1901 in Mariposa. Their children were: Daisy Gertrude (1891-1984), Ross Sherwood (b 1892), Luella (Ella) (b 1893), Roy Barkey (1896-1969) and Mary Alberta "Grace" (b 1898). Most of the Raymer family joined 3rd Ave Methodist Church in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1909. Only Grace joined later, in 1912. From at least 1911 to 1916, the Raymer family lived at 304 4th Ave N, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Ross enlisted for WWI on 9 May 1916. In 1921 they were living at 734 6th Ave. In 1922 John was listed at 116 Clarence and was working as a blacksmith for J I Case Threshing Machine. He died on 15 November 1938 in Saskatoon and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Nothing further was discovered about Emma.

Daisy was born on 1 February 1891 in Markham, Ontario. She married Albert Mitchell (Bert) Greensides in 1913 or 1914 in Saskatoon. He was born on 7 July 1889 in Ontario to William Samuel Greensides (1851-1936) and Margaret Emily Armstrong (1854-1929). His siblings were: William (b 1873), Charles (b 1879), Sarah Bella Louisa (Sadie) (b 1882), Barton Shipton (b 1884), Edna Pearl (1887-1964), Frank Wiman (b 1891), Ellen (Ella) (b 1894) and Margaret Armstrong (b 1899). The Greensides family lived in Saugeen, Bruce, Ontario in 1901 and Strathcona, Alberta in 1911. In 1911 Albert was enumerated in both Alberta with his family and in Saskatoon as a boarder with the Raymer family at 304 4th Ave N. Albert joined 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1911. Mrs AM Greensides appeared on the roll in 1914 suggesting her marriage to Bert at around that time. In 1916 Bert, Daisy and a daughter born in 1914 were enumerated at the same 4th Ave address. By 1923, three sons had been added to their family. Bert was a mechanic for Bowman Bros in 1918. In 1921 Bert, Daisy and family were living at 307 11th St E and Daisy's sister, Ella, and her husband, Charles Williams, were living with them. Bert and Daisy moved to California by 1935 and Bert died in Santa Clara, California on 12 December 1969. Daisy died at an unknown location on 18 May 1984. Both were buried in Mission City Memorial Park, Santa Clara, California.

Ella was born on 26 December 1893 in Markham, Ontario. She married Charles Williams who was born in Ireland in 1890. The 1921 census indicated that Charles immigrated to Canada in 1916. They were not married at the time that Ella signed the quilt, so the marriage must have occurred between 1918 and 1921. They lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba from at least 1938 to 1981 as that was the residence given for them in both the obituary of Ella's father (1938) and that of her sister, Grace Morrision (1981).

Grace was born on 13 December 1898 in Oakwood, Victoria, Ontario. According to her obituary, she married John Morrison in 1921. They had three boys and two girls. John died on 23 April 1968 and Grace on 25 December 1981. At the time of her death, Grace was living at 1223 Temperance Street in Saskatoon. Both Grace and John were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
