THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

LILLY ANN POWE née BARR

Lilly Ann Barr was born on 12 February 1881 in Hullett, Huron, Ontario to James Barr (b 1850) and Mary Ann Govier (b 1858). Her siblings were: William James (b 1878), Katherine Isabelle (Kate) (b 1884), Mary Jane Elizabeth (b 1886), Martha Maud Alice ( b 1888) and Sophia Etta May (b 1891). Lilly was raised in Hullett until at least 1881. By 1891, her family had moved to Blyth, Ontario.

Lilly married Wilbur Winans Powe sometime before 1911. He was born on 21 November 1877 in Ontario to James Dagg Powe (1848-1927) and Mary Jane Grant (1852-1944). His siblings were: Alice Gertrude (b 1878), Jennie Florence (b 1881), Lillian (b 1884), Arthur Grant (b 1892) and George Milton (1897-1985).

Lilly may first have appeared in a Saskatoon Henderson Directory as Lillian Powe working as a clerk at the post office and living on 11th St. However, there was no entry for Wilbur and there were no listings for either of them in 1909, so possibly Lillian was not the person discussed in this biography.

Wilbur first appeared in the Henderson Directories in 1910. He was a clerk for Spicer and Willoughby Coal Company and was living at 535 5th Ave North. In the 1911 census Lilly and Wilbur were in Saskatoon, likely at 119 21st St E. They were at 708 Melrose Ave in 1916 and in Edmonton, Alberta by 1921. In 1918, Wilbur was an accountant for North West Biscuit Company. Lilly and Wilbur both died in Edmonton, Lilly in Aug 1972 and Wilbur in July of 1960. They were buried in Mount Pleasant Municipal Cemetery in Edmonton.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Powe Tree.
