CECIL GEORGE GREENING

Cecil George Greening was born on 14 March 1886 in Woolwich, London, England to Clement Ireland Greening (b 1853) & Mary Curtis (b 1855). Cecil had four brothers, Clement John Curtis (1887-1964), Geoffrey Shafto (b 1889), Samuel (1891-1891) and Leslie (1892-1973) and two sisters, Violet M (b 1880) & Gertrude Olive (1887-1963). The family grew up in Surrey and south London where Clement was a labourer on the railway.

Cecil & Geoffrey sailed from Liverpool aboard SS ’Dominion’ departing 24 May 1906 and arrived in Montreal, Quebec on 3 June. Cecil was described as a blacksmith & Geoffrey as a cabinet maker. They were headed for Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Cecil married Ethel Maud ? (B 1886) in about 1909. Cecil must have joined the Canadian army as he was a member of a Canadian Military Contingent returning from England to Canada in July 1911. Cecil & Ethel had three sons, George Arthur Clement (1910-1990), Richard (1916-2003) and John (Jack) (1922-2011).

Cecil worked at the State Penitentiary, Prince Albert as a guard from about 1916. Cecil died in 1957 in Prince Albert.

George was an aircraft mechanic and then pilot ferrying supplies around northern Saskatchewan. The 1937 float biplane known as Old Bar BQ that George flew made a nostalgic return trip in 2008, courtesy of his brother Jack. See the video here
